Archbishop Hannan’s Hawks (1-5) host the Cohen Green Hornets tomorrow night in Hammond at Tornado Alley with kickoff set for 7 o’clock. Cohen is 3-3 on the year, coming off a 28-8 loss to West St. Mary’s High School.

Cohen won last year’s game 36-0. Both clubs are in a similar situation still recovering from Hurricane Katrina trying to rebuild their programs.

Hannan hopes to rebound from last week’s lopsided 61-16 road loss to Welsh.

The Hawks didn’t give themselves a chance last week as they turned the ball over on each of its first five possessions. Welsh made Hannan pay for their graciousness, converting all five miscues into a 35-0 lead. Senior kicker Michael Tiziani finally stopped the bleeding, getting the Hawks on the board with a 37-yard field goal just before the end of the first half.

Hawks’ senior fullback Gino Gioe was a bright spot last week scoring two-second half touchdowns for Hannan. He tallied on runs of two and seven yards.

Hannan gained 170 yards of offense last week, picking up 13 first downs. The Hawks’ Andrew Arceneaux passed for 149 yards, but was intercepted three times. Hannan’s ground game was limited to just 21 yards. The Hawks’ defense allowed 415 yards and 22 first downs in last week’s loss. Hannan gave up 247 yards rushing and 168 yards through the air.

Tommie Dyer is in his second-year as Cohen’s head coach. Cohen runs a spread offense, but mixes in the Wing-T. Senior quarterback George Mickey Williams (5-11, 215) takes the snaps. Sophomore fullback Ivan Williams (5-10, 220) is the Green Hornets’ leading rusher with freshman running back Nathaniel Anderson joining him in the backfield. Junior wide receiver Denzel Bashful (6-2, 185) is Cohen’s top pass catcher. Junior offensive starting right tackle Lynell Merrell (6-3, 235) is oddly enough Cohen’s fastest player with 4.4 speed in the 40. Merrell handles his team’s kickoff and punt returns.

Cohen committed six turnovers (three interceptions and three fumbles) all in the red zone.

Coach Dyer said his club has to do a better job of scoring in the red zone.

“We have moved the ball well all season long, but we have struggled in the red zone. We have to protect the football,” Dyer said.

Cohen mixes up their defense running a 4-3 and a 3-4 scheme. Junior middle linebacker Halston Hayes (6-0, 210) is the top tackler. Sophomore cornerback Le’Ryan Holmes (5-9, 170) highlights the secondary with junior outside linebacker Don Davis (5-11, 205).

Dyer said his team must stay disciplined on defense.

“We need to concentrate on stopping Hanna’s screen passes. We have to guard against them flooding the zone when they roll out,” Dyer added.
