Mandeville Junior edges Bogalusa

The Mandeville Junior High Patriots scored 19 first half points and then held off a talented Bogalusa team, escaping with a 19-18 win on the road extending their winning streak to four games. The Patriot offense was sharp, scoring on all three possessions in the first half with scoring drives of 68, 80 and 60 yards.

Nate Van Horn led MJH with 123 rushing yards and 50 receiving yards. Van Horn was also responsible for all three Patriot touchdowns.

After receiving the opening kickoff, the Patriots marched 68 yards for their first score. Kyle Pelligrinni’s PAT which followed, turned out to be the difference in the game. After exchanging scores on the next two possessions, MJH got the ball back with 1:22 left in the first half. After two consecutive running plays, QB Todd Primo rolled right, setting up a screen pass to Van Horn in the left flat. Key blocks by Jeremy Priola and Kiegan Marek sprung Van Horn for the 38-yard TD reception giving the Patriots a 19-12 halftime lead.

The story for the Patriots’ defense in the second half was one of “bend but don’t break,” forcing Bogalusa to sustain a long drive for their only second half score cutting the Patriot lead to 19-18. For the second week in a row, the defense was led by Parker Richerson with 10 tackles and Preston Winget who added seven.

Bogalusa scored on two big plays in the first half, one on a 42-yard TD run, and the other on a 50 yard double reverse pass.

The Patriots wrap up their season Tuesday, against cross-town rivals Fontainebleau at Mandeville High School.
