The $5.2 million expansion of the Belk’s department store in the Covington Stirling Shopping Center on Louisiana Highway 21 is almost complete.

Store manager Terri Flint said the new Belk’s will contain 112,000 square feet of shopping area and include many new and expanded departments and designer brands. The fine jewelry department, an addition to this store, will be unveiled Monday as part of a month-long renovation celebration.

On Nov. 15, the store will host its fall charity sale. Customers can purchase a $5 coupon from a charity of their choice. The coupon enables them to receive $5 off their first purchase during the four-hour event as well as special percentage- off purchases and a chance to win prizes from the store, including a $1,000 shopping spree. Any local charity can participate as long as it is a 501.c.3 charity, said Flint. To involve a charity, call Flint at 809-0366 ext. 201.

On Nov. 18 there will be a Murano hand blown glass heart-shaped pendant given away to the first 100 customers who visit the new fine jewelry counter from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m.

On Nov. 19 from 7-9 p.m., Belk’s will feature a business after hours sneak preview of the renovated store for West St. Tammany Chamber of Commerce members and their guests. Light refreshments will be served, and Chamber members will receive a 20 percent discount throughout the store, although normal exclusions apply. In addition, 12 strands of pearls will be given away as door prizes.

The ribbon cutting and official grand re-opening of the business will take place at 9:45 a.m. Nov. 20, with the doors opening at 10 a.m. The first 200 customers will receive gift cards valued from $5 up. There will also be special promotions, and customers can register to win one of four $250 prize packages.

Flint said that in addition to the flurry of activity related to the completed 40,000-square-foot addition and store renovation, the store will continue with normal holiday preparations, including the hiring of extra personnel for the holiday season beginning Nov. 1.

She said the store renovation is visible evidence of the corporation’s commitment to the area.

Many projects were cut back or discontinued nationally, but the Covington Belk’s project, originally scheduled for completion in March 2009, was moved up.
