Northlake Christian (1-6, 0-3) is at home tonight hosting the Desire Street Academy Lions with the Wolverines in the hunt for their first District 7-1A victory. Tonight’s game kicks off at 7 at William Pitcher Field in Covington.

District leader Kentwood knocked off NCS 35-6 last week. The Wolverines hung tough with eight minutes left in the third quarter only trailing 13-6 before falling to the Kangaroos.

Desire Street Academy (2-4, 0-3), located in Baton Rouge, routed Rabouin 46-0, last week in non-district action. Desire Street downed NCS 24-6 in last year’s game.

The Wolverine offense has struggled the past couple of weeks, only scoring six and seven points. Northlake’s only touchdown last week came on a 4-yard pass from freshman quarterback Tim Broussard to senior Will Werner. Broussard completed 9-of-15 passes for 74 yards with the TD pass and one interception. Broussard was the Wolverines’ leading ground gainer with 52 yards on 15 carries.

Desire Street Academy coach Jeff Sawyer is in his first year as the Lions’ head coach after serving as the team’s defensive coordinator for two years.

“They have a speedy quarterback (Broussard) who can run. He also has a strong arm. We will have to key on stopping him to be successful,” Sawyer said.

NCS coach Rowland Skinner said his team must execute on offense.

“We have moved the ball the past two weeks but haven’t been able to score points. We have to find a way to finish off the drives,” Skinner said.

Skinner said defensively, the Wolverines have been in games.

“We have played well, but we have to do a better job of getting off the field on third down situations,” he said.

Sophomore middle linebacker Shawn Burst is the Wolverines’ leading tackler with 99 stops, including 59 individual sops. He has caused four fumbles and broken up two passes. Burst has one sack. Wolverines’ senior defensive end Alex Reed has recorded 56 tackles (40 solo) with three caused fumbles and a sack.

Skinner described Desire Street’s offense as being very explosive.

“They have good overall team speed, especially at the skill positions. Their speed is a concern,” Skinner said.

Desire Street senior Greg Williams (6-2, 180) starts at quarterback, operating the Lions’ I-formation offense. Williams has passed for 535 yards with six touchdowns and three interceptions.

Sawyer said he has an excellent young tailback in eighth-grader Brent Terrance (5-6, 165), who leads the Lion rushing attack with 650 yards and three TDs.

Senior wide receiver/defensive back Steven Rogers (5-9, 180) is one of the Lions’ top two-way performers. Defensively, junior linebacker Pershing Mason (5-10, 185) is Desire Street’s leading tackler with 56 solo tackles.

He has posted six sacks. Junior linebacker Travis Dunn (5-10, 190) has registered 35 individual tackles and comes in with a team-high 11 sacks.
