The Northshore High School’s swim team swept the Northlake Regional High School Championship in Thursday’s meet held at Crossgates Family Fitness.

Northshore coach Ed Kelly said the championships provided quality swimming.

“I thought the competition from all teams was better than I’ve seen the last couple years,” Kelly said. “I attribute that to the Olympics with the influx of athletes. I’ve also seen that in the year-round programs.”

The combined team scores had NHS coming out on top with 636.5 points, followed by Fontainebleau (447.5), Mandeville (443), Slidell (215) and St. Scholastica (213) rounded out the top five of 12 teams. St. Paul’s (184) was sixth with Pope John Paul II (100) seventh, Northlake Christian School (83) eighth, Covington (66) ninth, Salmen (48) 10th and Pearl River (9) was 12th.

In the girls, the Lady Panthers captured the title with 355 points, winning over Mandeville (234) in the 11-team field. SSA (213) was third, followed by FHS (187), SHS (102), NCS (56), Ponchatoula (37), CHS (28), Salmen (18), PJP (10) and Pearl River (2).

Northshore’s Heather Winn won the 200 (2:03) and 500-yard freestyle (5:20). She was also part of a 400-yard freestyle team (3:57) that captured the top spot. Her teammates were Katie Bergerud, Annie Holladay and Colleen Donovan.

Winn said she was happy to come in first, but more importantly because it helped her squad win.

“I was pretty excited about winning. It’s always a good feeling to know you helped your team,” Winn said. “This performance sets the tone for what other teams can expect from us at metro and state.”

Mandeville’s Brittany Alexander also won multiple events. She took the 50 (25.87) and 100-free (55.50). She was also involved with the Lady Skippers’ winning teams in the 200-freestyle and 200-medley. The 200-freestyle squad (1:47) also included Emily Campbell, Sara Smithers and Rachel Cole. The 200-medley team (1:58) also had Campbell, Cole and Erin Peterson participating.

Fontainebleau’s Jessica Kopcso was a double winner, as she tallied first place in the 100-breaststroke (1:11) and the 100 butterfly (55.50).

Babcock said he was happy with his performance and said the conditions aided him since he has asthma.

“It was my best meet so far this season,” Babcock said. “The air was cold, but it helped me. I had good people to race against, so that helped push me more. This was my first time winning this year, so I was excited about it,” Babcock said.

MHS’ Phillip Gallego was the only other multiple winner. He captured the 50-free (22.59) and the 100-free (50.00), while racing on the 200-freestyle relay (1:34) team that took the top spot. His teammates were Walter Loop, Keegan Colbert and Cole Chance.
