St. Scholastica Academy senior libero (defensive specialist) Sam Delahoussaye is a four-year starter for the Doves. Delahoussaye helped SSA to a third place finish in District 5-I with a 10-4 district mark this season. She delivered a strong match with 23 digs Friday afternoon, helping to spark the Doves to a bi-district round playoff victory over their district foe Slidell Lady Tigers.

Delahoussaye has verbally committed to play volleyball for LSU.

Coach Danny Davis described Delahoussaye as a human vacuum cleaner on the defensive end. Davis used two words to describe his outstanding libero, incredible and amazing.

Sam Delahoussaye

“Sam means an awful lot to our team. Since her eighth grade year we moved her up to JV. She has become one of the best defensive players in the state. I am confident she will do really well in college playing for LSU,” Davis said.

Davis characterized her as a wonderful person and super athlete.

“Sam is driven, and is so focused. She is awfully competitive. I very seldom have to tell her anything. I just let her do her thing. She gets in a flow, and definitely has mojo when it comes to defense,” Davis added.

Delahoussaye has registered an astounding 1,886 digs to this point in her illustrious career, and still counting as the Doves look to advance further in the ongoing LHSAA state playoffs.

What do you enjoy most about playing volleyball? I’m proud to be a part of the SSA volleyball team. I love playing for the Doves. Our team is known for its defense. I feel we are a good defensive club. We have always had good volleyball teams, and its great to be part of the program.

What do you like best about being a student athlete? You have to maintain your grades. I guess I do a pretty good job of that (3.95 grade point average).

Do you feel an added responsibility of being a role model as a student athlete? You have to always be responsible for your actions and do what’s right. I take everything seriously to always do the right thing.

Most memorable game in sports? It was a pretty big deal earlier this year when we beat Fontainebleau in the Newman Tournament. It was also awesome winning district last year with an undefeated record (14-0).

Who has been the most influential person in your school sports career? Coach Danny Davis. She also credited her sister Bobbie, a previous four-year starting setter for the Doves, who graduated in 2007, and now attends LSU as being a great role model.

Who is your favorite athlete? Gold medalist volleyball player Misty May-Trainor.

Favorite team? LSU Tigers football team.

What is your favorite subject in school? Math.

Plans after high school/college major? Has verbally committed to play volleyball at LSU. I think I want to become an orthodontist.

Favorite sports movie/ TV show/actor/actress? “Remember the Titans,” “Gossip Girls.” Ben Stiller and Blake Lively.

Favorite type of music? Rock.

Favorite food dish? Chips and salsa.

Best vacation? Last year’s volleyball trip to Disneyworld to play in a tournament.

Best thing about living on the Northshore? I like it because it isn’t as crowded as the Southshore. I love being able to attend SSA.

Hobbies/volunteering: I enjoy watching action type movies. I helped out with a project in St. Bernard rebuilding homes.

Parents: Michael and Sharon Delahoussaye of Madisonville.
