Covington’s Fighting Lions gave it their all Friday night in Thibodaux before falling to the unbeaten Tigers, 26-21, in the bi-district round of the Class 5A state football playoffs.

CHS (4-6) entered the playoffs as a No. 28 seed, facing Thibodaux (9-0), the No. 5 seed.

Thibodaux, by virtue of being the higher seeded team, will host the St. Paul’s Wolves in the regional round Friday.

SPS defeated John Ehret, 34-10, to advance.

Covington’s junior quarterback Tyler Scott passed for three touchdowns, hitting Neil Blanchard on two scoring tosses and Eddie Pea on a 24-yarder. Spencer Graham kicked all three PATs.

Trailing 26-14, Scott connected with Blanchard from 15 yards out with just 1:45 remaining.

Graham attempted an on side kick, which the Lions’ Otis Jacobs recovered, but the ball didn’t travel the required 10 yards before it was recovered. Thibodaux took possession and ran out the clock.

CHS first-year coach Malter Scobel said he was proud of the way his team battled back from a two-touchdown deficit.

“They continued to fight just like they have all season long. It was a group effort on defense,” Scobel said.

He highlighted the play of Lions’ senior nose guard Casey Hebert, who recording three tackles for losses.

Scobel said his club met some expectations.

“Our kids gave everything they had,” he said. “We probably overachieved at times, but at the same time we have to learn not to be overachievers, but to become a good ball club and expect it.”

Scobel said he had a very good senior class of 30 players who provided good leadership.

“We have to learn from our mistakes. We have to continue to improve for next year. I’m looking forward to next year,” Scobel added.

" GREAT team effort. Again they were the smallest team on the field. They continue to play hard and had their chances. This is a huge turnaround from last year. Last years team averaged 6pts on offense, this year 18. Defense gave up 34pts per game, this year 21. Total reversal from last year to this year. I think this team will challenge for district next year and the years to come. Congrats to CHS players and coaches for a pretty good year!!! "
