Apparently a full belly of waffles didn’t satisfy a Mississippi man’s hunger last year. Now he has five years in prison to think about it.

Marty Lee, 45, of Lumberton, Miss., was sentenced Monday to five years for pick pocketing a Waffle House patron near Interstate 12 south of Covington on March 23 after a late night meal, District Attorney Walter Reed spokesman Rick Wood said.

Lee, found guilty in a jury trial of simple robbery earlier this year, grabbed the victim’s wallet as the two waited in line to pay for their dinner bill, Wood said.

Lee took off running, but he didn’t get far.

The victim gave chase, tackled Lee and held him at bay until Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived to make an arrest, Wood said.

State Judge Larry Green sentenced Lee.

In another sentencing this week, a 48-year-old Lacombe man received five years for looting bed linens and other housewares from J.C. Penney at Northshore Square Mall in Slidell, Wood said.

On Aug. 11, 2006, Manuel Sam Webber and two females were caught with a boxful of the goods, worth $1,500, while they loaded up their vehicle in the parking lot.

Moments earlier, Webber was seen with the woman, Chantrell Boutrin, 28, of Slidell, carrying a handful of designer jeans, without a bag, through the mall. When spotted by a Slidell police office on detail, Webber ditched the jeans and left, only to emerge several minutes later in a different area of the mall, Wood said.

The officer watched Webber enter another undisclosed store and bolt to the parking lot with a box of stolen goods, Wood said.

Boutrin later pleaded guilty in July 2007 and was sentenced to three years’ probation. The getaway driver, 38-year-old Debbie Webber, Manuel Webber’s sister, also later pleaded guilty and received probation and a three-year suspended sentence.

It’s Webber’s fourth conviction after being found guilty of manslaughter, theft and credit card forgery in Georgia, Wood said.

The prior convictions qualify Webber for sentencing as a career criminal, where he will face 20 years to life in prison if convicted Dec. 12, Wood said.
