NCS hosts holiday basketball camp

Northlake Christian is sponsoring a Thanksgiving basketball camp tomorrow through Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. for participants in grades 1-7. The $100 camp fee includes a T-shirt.

Coaches Monty Fontenot and Ryan Perkins will conduct the camp. No lunch will be served, but the camp store will be open with snack items for sale. Basketball campers will be able to deposit money in a camp bank account to purchase snacks. To pre-register, send check payable to WAPA or you can register on Monday morning. Legends holding basketball camp

Fontainebleau High coach Barry Dotson and Mandeville’s John Priola are conducting the Legends Thanksgiving Basketball Camp from tomorrow through Wednesday at Pelican Park’s Brown Gym for children in kindergarten through eighth grade.

There are three time slots available, including two half-days and a full day.

Half-days run from 9 a.m. to noon and 12:30-3:30 p.m. The full day goes from 9 a.m. through 3:30 p.m.

The cost is $80 for half days without lunch and $95 with lunch. The full days are $100 without lunch and $115 with lunch.

Campers receive a free T-shirt, participate in daily competitions, games, contests, giveaways and prizes.

The camp’s goal is to provide a positive and fun recreational place where campers can become better and more inspired players.

Sign up forms are available at Legends Sports World. You have until Legends’ close of business today to drop off your form. After that, signups will take place at the camp.

St. Paul’s holding

The St. Paul’s eighth grade and junior varsity basketball teams will play against Country Day School in the New Orleans Arena at 12:30 p.m. Dec. 6.

If you purchase a ticket for this event, you will receive a ticket for the New Orleans Hornets-Memphis Grizzlies game that evening at 7 o’clock.

College Softball Camp

The 2009 College Softball Camp will be held Jan. 3-4 at the Coquille Sports Complex. This is an opportunity for high school players to participate in workouts with college coaches from LSU, UL-L, USM, SLU, LA Tech, Nicholls, Southern, Centenary, Millsaps College, Mississippi College, Louisiana College, McNeese, LSU-A, LSU-E and others. Montz holding soccer camps in December

The Jared Montz Pro Soccer Camps will be held Dec. 13-14 at Coquille Sports Complex and Dec. 27-31 at Pelican Park.

Montz is a Mandeville High graduate and professional soccer player.

Both clinics are for children ages 5-13. The one at Coquille will run from 1-4 p.m. $75 if you sign up by Dec. 12 and $85 by Dec. 13.

The cost includes an autographed picture, Montz soccer ball, question and answer session, chances to win Montz gear, prize giveaway, camper action pictures from e-mail and a chance to be on Montz TV.

Campers must provide water, ball, cleats, shin guards and sunscreen.

For the clinic at Pelican Park, the cost is $180 by Nov. 25, $195 by Dec. 26 and then $205 by Dec. 27. The cost covers the same things in both camps, but participants receive a T-shirt in the second camp.

The camp will run from 1-4 p.m. on Dec. 27-28 and 9 a.m. until noon Dec. 29-31.

Slidell High boys’ soccer Alumni Game

Slidell High will be hosting an Alumni soccer game on Dec. 27 at 2 p.m. to help raise money for the current team and to celebrate the school’s 100th anniversary.

SHS is looking for all former players from the 1980s to 2008, who would like to participate.

A $25 donation is asked from all players.

Umpire training begins on Jan. 11

Training for high school and recreational baseball/softball umpires begins on Jan. 11, 2009.

No experience is necessary and the average pay is $18 an hour.

Pelican Running Club meets on Saturdays

The Pelican Running Club is a Pelican Athletic Club community program and is in its third marathon-training season. The group meets each Saturday morning at 7 at the Mandeville Trailhead for a group training run on the Tammany Trace. The suggested training schedules (available online at mardigrasmarathon.com) are designed for folks training to complete their first marathon or half-marathon event. The group is very participatory in nature and we’ve had great fun the past two years preparing for the New Orleans Mardi Gras Marathon events. Northshore Tennis Association offers youth program

The Northshore Tennis Association has an ongoing Junior and Mr. Pee Wee development tennis program for boys and girls ages 4-18. It starts with private or semi-private sessions to familiarize youngsters with tennis terms, stroke production and procedures. The year-round programs are held on the Kehoe-France Northshore School and public courts in Covington and Mandeville.

Competitions are held for boys and girls 10 and under that have not been ranked on a state level and are new to tournament competition.

Yearly registration is $25 and $5 and an unopened can of tennis balls is required per tournament or $8 total per tournament.
