Texas Hold’em tournament set

The Covington Rotary Club is sponsoring a Texas hold’em poker tournament Saturday afternoon at 4 at the Mandeville Lions Club.

The cost is $60 and a $1,200 gift card is guaranteed for first place.

St. Paul’s playing at N. O. Arena

The St. Paul’s eighth grade and junior varsity basketball teams will play against Country Day School in the New Orleans Arena at 12:30 p.m. Dec. 6.

If you purchase a ticket for this event, you will receive a ticket for the New Orleans Hornets-Memphis Grizzlies game that evening at 7 o’clock. Tickets are $14. For tickets or additional information contact Mike Toups, St. Paul’s Varsity Basketball Coach, at (504) 554- 7367.

College Softball Camp planned

The 2009 College Softball Camp will be held Jan. 3-4 at the Coquille Sports Complex. This is an opportunity for high school players to participate in workouts with college coaches from LSU, UL-L, USM, SLU, LA Tech, Nicholls, Southern, Centenary, Millsaps College, Mississippi College, Louisiana College, McNeese, LSU-A, LSU-E and others. The Jared Montz Pro Soccer Camps will be held Dec. 13-14 at Coquille Sports Complex and Dec. 27-31 at Pelican Park.

Slidell High boys’ soccer Alumni Game

Slidell High will be hosting an Alumni soccer game on Dec. 27 at 2 p.m. to help raise money for the current team and to celebrate the school’s 100th anniversary.

SHS is looking for all former players from the 1980s to 2008, who would like to participate.

A $25 donation is asked from all players.

The program is trying to keep a firm count on the number of players, so send checks or contact Gipson by Dec. 22.

Umpire training begins on Jan. 11

Training for high school and recreational baseball/softball umpires begins on Jan. 11, 2009.

No experience is necessary and the average pay is $18 an hour.

Pelican Running Club meets on Saturdays

The Pelican Running Club is a Pelican Athletic Club community program and is in its third marathon-training season. The group meets each Saturday morning at 7 at the Mandeville Trailhead for a group training run on the Tammany Trace. The suggested training schedules (available online at mardigrasmarathon.com) are designed for folks training to complete their first marathon or half-marathon event. The group is very participatory in nature and we’ve had great fun the past two years preparing for the New Orleans Mardi Gras Marathon events. Northshore Tennis Association offers youth program

The Northshore Tennis Association has an ongoing Junior and Mr. Pee Wee development tennis program for boys and girls ages 4-18. It starts with private or semi-private sessions to familiarize youngsters with tennis terms, stroke production and procedures. The year-round programs are held on the Kehoe-France Northshore School and public courts in Covington and Mandeville.

Competitions are held for boys and girls 10 and under that have not been ranked on a state level and are new to tournament competition.

Yearly registration is $25 and $5 and an unopened can of tennis balls is required per tournament or $8 total per tournament.
