Covington Police busted a pair of suspected drug dealing brothers this week when a 12-block foot chase through the city’s most notorious drug hot zone ended in arrest.

Darting between houses and through back yards, Covington police officers finally tackled and arrested Terry Jones, 23, 820 N. Van Buren St., after he fled a home on W. 29th Avenue, where he was allegedly selling crack cocaine, Capt. Jack West said.

Patrolling policemen Sgt. Steve Culotta and Officer Jason Cortez of Covington’s Street Crimes Unit made the arrest after an anonymous tipster told them of Jones’ dealing. As their unit passed by the home to investigate, Jones fled, and the chase began.

Twelve blocks later Jones was arrested with an ounce of crack cocaine, valued at $2,000, stuffed in his pants, West said.

Sensing the “unusually” high amount of drugs recovered was just the beginning of an illegal enterprise, Covington police went to what they thought was Jones’ home at 819 N. Polk to find more drugs.

Instead they found his brother, Kevin Jones, 19, fidgety and nervous as he answered the door.

The behavior made the officers suspicious, and they eventually patted down Kevin Jones and discovered several grams of crack cocaine, West said.

Kevin Jones, like his brother, was charged with distribution of a schedule II narcotic in a drug free zone. Terry Jones was also charged with resisting an officer. They were each booked into St. Tammany Parish Jail Tuesday

" The city of Covington is fortunate to have the Police Department they do. A small underpaid group of dedicated Americans putting thier lives on the line to protect and serve. Over an ounce of crack and two bad guys in jail, thats what our tax dollars are for, keeping us safe and putting criminals where they belong. "
