KMB awards three grants

The Keep Mandeville Beautiful organization has awarded three $500 beautification grants to Mandeville neighborhoods Tanglewood, Fontainebleau and Beau Rivage.

The money will fund gardening projects in the subdivisions that will ultimately beautify areas within Mandeville city limits.

Earlier this year KMB requested communities like subdivisions and businesses to submit applications to receive $500 for the beautification of a piece of property located within city limits. The money was available because of a $1,500 Tree Alliance grant KMB received recently.

Applicants had to submit entries with a detailed account of what the money would be used for and a diagram of the area to be landscaped.

The entries were judged in seven categories, including impact on area, visibility, community purpose, completion of submission packet, within city limits and hardscape less than 30 percent of design. KMB board member and Master Gardener Mary Begue carefully reviewed and judged the applicants. Considering it was the first year the grants were offered, Begue was pleased with the number and quality of entries.

“We feel this is a worthwhile project that will be made available on an annual basis,” KMB board member and Master Gardener Peg Usner said.

KMB, an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, is a volunteer organization dedicated to reducing litter, beautifying the community and increasing environmental awareness. Its programs and activities are designed to improve the physical appearance of Mandeville, and bolster an overall sense of pride. To volunteer or become a member, call 624-3165.
