The Grand Theatre Slidell 16 is hoping residents will forget their cares this season with “It’s a Grand & Wonderful Life,” a holiday campaign beginning Nov. 28.

The theatre is partnering with the local chapter of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation to invite patrons to bring new, unwrapped toys for boys and girls when they come to the movies. The toys will be placed under a 12-foot Christmas tree adorned with white lights and Coca-Cola ornaments, which will also be donated to children by Toys for Tots.

In addition, on Dec. 13 and 14 at 10 a.m. the theatre will present special screenings of the Frank Capra classic “It’s a Wonderful Life” at no charge.

“The message of the movie is all about people banding together to get through the hard times,” said Lisa Burwell, a spokesperson for Southern Theatres L.L.C., the Grand’s parent company. “Just because the economy is bad, if you have your health, your family and friends, things are still good.”

The campaign and special screenings will take place at all 18 theatres owned by Southern around the region. According to Burwell, General Manager George Solomon made the decision to present the campaign in lieu of his company’s annual Christmas party, saying he felt it was especially important to remember those in need this season.
