Too stuffed to shop? St. Tammany retailers are hoping otherwise as they gear up for the Christmas shopping season.

If, indeed, you are in a spending mood in anticipation of the holidays, please remember a few things:

Be patient, because the lines may be longer than they ordinarily are, and be kind to your fellow shoppers and sales people because we’re all in the same boat;

Dress casually and comfortably.

Although St. Tammany law enforcement agencies will be doing their best to ensure safety, it’s always wise to play it safe, so:

• Avoid carrying large amounts of cash and pay for purchases with a check or credit card when possible;

• Notify the credit card issuer immediately if your card is lost or stolen;

• Even though you are rushed and thinking about a thousand things, stay alert to your surroundings;

• When shopping, try to park in a well-lit portion of the lot or street;

• When you park your car, try to secure your valuables that you have left in your car. (It is better not to leave valuables in the car.) Make sure you lock your doors, close your windows and activate your car alarm, if you have one;

• While you are shopping, remember to keep your purse close to your body and if you carry a wallet, carry it in your coat pocket or front pants pocket, not in your back pants pocket. Be sure not to carry all of your credit cards with you. Leave your unneeded documents at home; and

• Constantly be aware of your personal items. Know where your purse, cell phone, wallet, packages, etc. are at all times. Do not leave them unattended. Do not overburden yourself with packages.

When you are done shopping, have your keys in your hand before reaching your car. Take notice of your surroundings.

If you see that someone is watching you and that you may be a potential victim, return to a store immediately and call security or 9-1-1.

Happy shopping, St. Tammany!
