Salmen beats NHS in basketball

Salmen’s Spartans opened their season with a 63-38 home victory over the Northshore Panthers last Friday.

Daron Populist led Salmen with 16 points, while R.J. Scott and Jared Harrison each finished with 12.

Northshore’s leading scorer was Michael Lewis, who posted nine. Archie Ambo and Jervious Epherson each tallied eight, and Chris Ruiz scored six points.

PJP, Pearl River

Pope John Paul II played Pearl River to a 2-2 tie in a non-district match held Monday at PRHS.

Ernesto Armador scored both Rebels’ goals.

PJP is 1-0-2 this season, while Pearl River is 0-1-2.

The Jaguars were down 2-0, but like they did in the previous two matches, they came back.

The match was scoreless at halftime, but Pearl River scored its first goal when Vincent Piazza found Armador with a pass and he scored to make it 1-0.

Armador then tallied an unassisted goal, extending the lead to 2-0, but PJP came back.

Andrew Morse scored on a penalty kick cutting the Pearl River advantage to 2-1. Then Tyler Lusignan tied the match with the contest’s final goal.

PJP coach Jack Mills named Sidney Corwin his top defender, while Pearl River coach Bob Devall named goalkeeper Kevin Dancer his top defender.

Mandeville blanks EA in soccer

The Mandeville Lady Skippers defeated the East Ascension Lady Spartans 5-0 Tuesday at the Covington Youth Soccer Fields. 

MHS improved to 3-0 with the Pineville Rebel Cup tournament today and tomorrow ahead of them. East Ascension fell to 1-1.

Mandeville was led by a pair of goals from senior forward Rachelle Giroir, but it was sophomore Kaitlin Davis who got the scoring started off an assist from freshman Elizabeth Manuel. 

Emily Descant had a goal and a pair of assists, while junior Abby Post finished with one goal.

Amy Howard was in goal for her second shutout of the season in as many games and led MHS on defense. 

Covington falls

Covington’s Lady Lions suffered a 5-0 defeat to Terrebonne Monday in a non-district match held at CHS.

The Lady Lions are 1-2 this season.

Covington trailed 2-0 at halftime and Terrebonne added three goals in the second half.

Despite the loss, CHS coach Scott Dupree named freshman Kelsey Brown as his top defender.
