Mandeville downed by Jesuit

Mandeville lost to the Jesuit Blue Jays, 70-61, Monday in non-district action at MHS. Jesuit placed three players in double figures, led by Dominick Scelfo with a game-high 25 points. Colby Kiefer added 16 points, and Cameron Eckholdt had 10 for the Blue Jays.

MHS senior Jordane Ganapamo tallied 19 points, followed by Chad Alfaro with 13. Blake Kelley and Timmy Tryforos contributed nine points each. Jesuit (5-1) held a 37-34 halftime lead.

MHS (4-4) is hosting the Mandeville Skipper Classic today through Friday. The Skipper Classic tips off this afternoon at 3:30 with Salmen going against Bogalusa. Game 2: Catholic High vs. Destrehan; game 3: Fontainebleau vs. Warren Easton; game 4: Mandeville vs. Northlake Christian.

St. Paul’s falls to Brother Martin

St. Paul’s fell to Brother Martin, 63-56, Saturday at home. Brother Martin’s Schane Rillieux finished with 17 points, followed by Jamon Gray with 16. SPS’ Luke Baumgartner topped all scorers with 23 points, hitting on 7-of-10 treys. Jonathan Schoen totaled 11 points for the Wolves, all coming in the second half. Josh White added 10 points, while Derek Arnold hauled in six rebounds with four assists and two points. Jeff Coute came through with four assists for the Wolves.

SPS trailed 29-24 at the half. The Wolves tied the game at 47-47 with 5:10 left.

St. Paul’s is 4-2.

SPS coach Mike Toups said he was pleased with how hard his team played against a solid Brother Martin squad.

“Being a close contest with a very good Brother Martin team should pay us dividends later in the season,” he said.

CHS trims Bogalusa

Covington placed three players in double figures Friday, led by Jordan Bedford’s 19 points, as the Lions edged Bogalusa, 74-70, in a non-district game played at CHS.

Phillip Bickham delivered 18 points, and Joel Bailey finished with 13.

Terrance Singleton added eight points, followed by Darren Lee and Jarius Bickham with seven points each.

Bogalusa’s Drew Gallaway led all scorers with 25 points. William Smith and Ryan Crumedy tacked on 12 points each, with Brandon Magee and Justin Robinson adding nine points each for the Lumberjacks.

St. Paul’s Invitational

St. Paul’s made it into last Wednesday’s championship game, but the host Wolves came up short, falling to Country Day, 47-29, in the St. Paul’s Invitational. Morgan Wells topped the Wolves with 11 points, and Derek Arnold contributed six points and seven rebounds.

Country Day’s Eddie Ludwig was named the Tournament MVP. St. Paul’s Luke Baumgartner and Jeff Coote were named to the All Tournament team along with Fontainebleau’s Quin Cooper, Matt Derenbecker (Country Day) and Josh Major (Chalmette).

Chalmette downed Zachary 58-57 to take third place in the tourney.

St. Paul’s edged John McDonogh, 70-67, in overtime last Monday. The Wolves placed four players in double figures, led by Coote and Baumgartner with 16 points each. Coote connected on 11-of-12 attempts from the free throw line. He also handed out five assists and was credited with taking five charges.

Morgan Wells delivered 13 points and four assists. Josh White also finished with 13 points, while Arnold pulled down seven rebounds for the Wolves.

St. Paul’s trailed 53-42 with less than a minute to play in the third quarter until White drained two three-pointers to cut the lead to five points. St. Paul’s was also down 64-59 with about two minutes left in overtime when Baumgartner connected on two treys to regain the lead for the Wolves.

In Tuesday’s semifinal game, the host Wolves defeated the Chalmette Owls, 60-38. Baumgartner drained four three-pointers and finished with 19 points. Coote finished with 15 points, while Jonathan Schoen and White posted 10 points each. Arnold collected nine rebounds to go with four assists.

Fontainebleau’s Bulldogs posted a 2-1 record in the tournament, upping its season record to 3-1. FHS lost to Chalmette, 73-60, last Monday. Taylor Hanby led three players in double figures with 15 points. Cooper added 13 points followed by Jason Green with 11.

Chalmette held a 39-29 halftime lead. The teams scored 14 points each in the third quarter before Chalmette outscored Fontainebleau 20-17 in the final period to take the victory.

In Tuesday’s game, FHS defeated McDonogh, 73-68, behind Cooper’s 26 points. Hanby and Green chipped in with 16 points each for the Bulldogs. FHS clicked on 27-of-34 free throw attempts (79.4 percent). The Bulldogs trailed 32-31 at the half. FHS outscored McDonogh 16-13 in the third quarter and 26-23 in the final period to post the five-point victory.

Fontainebleau closed out taking a 76-57 victory over the Destrehan Wildcats. Cooper finished with 21 points for the Bulldogs followed by Green and Hanby with 17 points each. The Bulldogs made the most of their free throw opportunities, draining 23-of-27 attempts (85.1 percent). After being outscored by 17-8 in the first quarter, FHS turned the tables, scoring 25 points in the second period to take a 33-28 halftime lead.

  

CHS goes 1-2

in tourney

Covington finished 1-2 in the St. Thomas Aquinas Tournament. CHS edged Slidell, 65-63, in the opener with Phillip Bickham dropping in a game-high 26 points. Jordan Bedford contributed 18 points. Slidell’s Josh Richardson finished with 18 points, and Joseph Gayles added 14 for the Tigers.

CHS fell in their second game, 68-55, to Albany. Phil Bickham tallied 20 points, with Bedford adding 14 and Marquis Porter nine.

Albany placed four players in double figures led by Terry Jackson with 18 points. Shydun Jackson contributed 14 points, followed by Cordelius Johnson with 12.

Covington then fell to St. Stanislaus, 75-53. Phil Bickham finished off the tournament with his third straight double-digit performance, scoring 14 points.

Joel Bailey, Jarius Bickham and Terrance Singleton made eight points each to the Lions’ attack followed by Darren Lee with six. St. Stanislaus’ Daniel Guires topped all scorers with 20 points.

MHS 1-2 in Jesuit Invitational

Mandeville finished 1-2 in the Jesuit Invitational during the Thanksgiving break. MHS was edged by Karr, 64-59, last Sunday in their first tournament game. Jordan Ganapamo topped the Skippers with 21 points followed by Zach Adema with 12.

Tuesday, the Skippers fell to McMain, 58-47, in overtime. The game was tied 47-47 at the end of regulation, but the Skippers failed to score in the OT, losing by 11 points. Ganapamo dropped in 17 points, followed by Adema and Timmy Tryforos with 10 points each. MHS closed out the tourney defeating the Holy Cross Tigers, 53-35, behind Adema’s 14 points. Tryforos tallied 13 points followed by Ganapamo with 10.
