Five reach double figures in 92-79 win

Five Millsaps College players scored in double figures Sunday, led by junior Blake Martinez with a career-high 23 points, as the host Majors snapped a five-game losing streak and notched their first win of the 2008-09 season, taking a 92-79 victory over Rust College.

Martinez, a 2006 Mandeville High graduate, hit on 7-of-13 shots. Martinez is averaging 14.4 points per game, playing 30 minutes per contest. The junior sharp shooter has hit on 24-of-59 two-point field goal attempts (40.7 percent), while clicking on 15-of-46 three-point shots (32.6 percent). He has 22 rebounds, averaging 4.4 boards per game with a total of nine assists.

Millsaps never trailed in Sunday’s victory, opening up a 12-point halftime lead, 46-34, behind 57 percent shooting from the floor connecting on 11 3-pointers.

The Majors built their lead to as many as 19 points in the second half and never allowed the visiting Bearcats to get inside double digits.

Millsaps (1-4) connected on a season-high 18 3-pointers for the game with eight different players recording at least one. Martinez’ 23 points were supported by Chad Songy with 15 points, Chris Sanders added 14 followed by Chris Ingle with 13. Russell Booth added 11 points for the Majors.
