The Mandeville Police Department invites you to a special Town Hall meeting Wednesday at City Hall at 7 p.m. for discussions involving the new community policing policy.

The department hopes to answer any questions from residents concerning the new method and its effects on the community.

In early October, the Mandeville PD officially re-implemented its community policing program after Hurricane Katrina disrupted the department’s policing methods.

A report initiated by the Metropolitan Crime Commission, released earlier this year, found the department to be lacking a true community policing method. The report suggested they get back to the widely accepted method for more efficient policing.

Under the new program, officers are now assigned to specific areas of the city where they will patrol their districts indefinitely and familiarize themselves with the community.

This new method will also allow the community to become more acquainted with their assigned officers.

Along with the designated districts, Officer Eric Gulino and Chief Tom Buell have developed a Community Policing Problem Identification/Solution report that will help officers address and alleviate recurring calls.

" Assigning volunteer police chaplains to specific police sectors where their respective congregations are located serves two purposes. 1)Clergy is known in the community and are privy to issues in their specific neighborhood. 2) A PD has an additional voice in the community to relay police initiatives. The communications between police and citizens becomes more effective.

PD chaplains’ presence in the community contributes significantly to community policing. Ref: Stories of the Street: Images of the Human Condition. www.strategicbookpublishing.com/StoriesOfThe Street.html "
