The long-awaited second phase of street pavings in Covington will begin Monday, according to Tony Ricks, project manager for Pinnacle Engineering.

The first street on the list is North Florida Street between West 30th Avenue and West 32nd Avenue, followed by Magee from the Fairgrounds to Collins Boulevard.

Notices will be distributed to affected residents and businesses stating that “Cement stabilization on your roadway or street could commence as soon as 48 hours from delivery of this notice.”

During the process, roadways will be blocked to through traffic while the cement cures. Motorists are advised not to attempt to drive on roadways until the barricades are removed because the soil cement process, which will cause cement dust, and the emulsion process will stick to cars and shoes. Even then, cars should proceed with caution until the emulsion is set and will no longer fly up and hit your car.

The emulsion is the goopy tarry stuff that can get on cars after streets are paved. Ricks said that detour signs will be used to deter traffic, but roads will be open to local residents. Streets will be kept closed for about 24 hours, but if the weather is cold, the streets will take longer to cure.

Warmer weather helps the streets cure faster.

Although no completion for the full project has been set, residents are urged to use caution in approaching newly paved streets.

The following streets will be affected in the order given, although exact dates have not been determined:

N. Madison Street from N. Columbia Street to E. 26th Avenue; N. Buchanan from Columbia Street to W. 32nd Avenue; W. 22nd Avenue from N. Tyler Street to Mile Branch; S.
