Republican women hosting holiday luncheon, auction

Published on Monday, December 8, 2008 9:18 AM CST

The Slidell Republican Women’s Club will host its annual Christmas Luncheon and Auction Dec. 12 at 10:30 a.m. at The Gallery, 137 Taos St., in Slidell.

Tickets are $20 per person, and guests may also choose to donate a wrapped gift for the auction, limited to a cost of $20 or less. Luncheon guests can look for an unusual surprise gift this year and can try to identify special Santa Elves, who will help with the event.

The luncheon and auction serves as the major fundraiser for the club, which carries out various community projects and charitable endeavors throughout the year.

Among them is the Literacy Project, through which dictionaries are distributed to area school children.

Another is the Elephant Trunk, which makes possible a number of different projects, such as distributing school supplies to area public schools, and making handmade rosaries for area servicemen at home and overseas.

In addition, this year the SRWC facilitated a delivery of textbooks to schools in Africa.

Funding from this year’s Christmas Auction will also help establish a new endeavor, the Pearl Williams Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship will recognize an outstanding area high school student in the spring.

The club also actively supports area Republican candidates for elected office. Prospective new members are welcome, and can choose to participate in any of these endeavors.

Reservations must be received by Tuesday. Call Donna Guidry at 502-5677 or 649-0483 to RSVP. Current members may also make reservations by contacting Guidry at her e-mail address in the membership directory.

For more information about joining the SRWC, contact club president Karen Fandal at 641-8121.
