Galatas, a 5-9, 170-pound receiver/kick returner for Millsaps College, has been named the SCAC Special Teams Player of the Year.
Millsaps finished the 2008 football season with an 11-1 record, falling to Washington and Jefferson, 35-20, in the second round of the playoffs Saturday. Millsaps posted a 7-0 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference record, managing an average margin victory of 31 points. The Majors were recognized with 20 players being named to the 2008 All-SCAC Football Team.

Galatas, a sophomore, had both a punt return (49 yards) and kick return (71 yards) for touchdown, becoming the first Millsaps’ player to perform that feat since 2006. He returned 20 kickoffs for 473 yards, averaging 23.6 yards per return. He returned six punts for 91 yards, a 15.2-yard average with one TD return.
Galatas was twice named the SCAC Special Teams Player-of-the-Week this season. As a receiver, Galatas was selected to the First Team after catching 33 passes for 589 yards and four TDs. He averaged 17.8 yards per reception with a long gainer of 71 yards.
Galatas garnered five of the coaches’ 10 votes in the Special Teams Player-of-the-Year voting.
Galatas said he was told about the awards by his wide receiver coach, David Johnson.
“I couldn’t believe it. It was one of my happiest moments. It’s special to receive the recognition as a sophomore. People were saying I might get the special teams award, but I didn’t think I would be recognized as a First Team receiver,” Galatas said.
Earlier in the season when he was recognized as the SCAC Special Teams Player of the Week against Trinity, he learned of his selection by his mother, Euradel, who resides in Lacombe, after she saw a posting on the Millsaps’ Web site.
“This time around I had to call my mom to let her know. She was very happy for me and then just started calling my dad, my brother and other family members,” Galatas said.
Galatas said he was on his way to receive a treatment on his injured foot that kept him out of the playoff game with Washington & Jefferson when he got the call from his coach.
Galatas, a business major, said it was very frustrating to miss the final game of the season.
“It killed me to be out of the lineup just standing on the sideline with my teammates. We had a fantastic season,” Galatas said.
He also missed the majority of the Rhodes College game Sept. 27, a 49-2 victory, when he suffered a concussion. He was running a pass route over the middle and was kneed by a defender.
Joseph, a 6-2, 188-pound senior quarterback from Edgard, is the first player in SCAC history to earn the league’s Offensive POTY award three times. A three-time SCAC Player-of-the-Week during the season (giving him nine awards for his career), Joseph completed 301-of-445 passes for 3,463 yards with 32 touchdowns against just six interceptions.
He was a two-time D3football.com Team of the Week honoree and had seven 300-yard plus passing games, which included a school-record six TD passing performance against Rhodes.
After guiding Millsaps to its third playoff bid in school history and second in three years, DuBose was selected by his peers as SCAC Coach-of-the-Year. He also won the honor in 2006.
The Majors ran the table in 2008, posting a perfect 10-0 regular season mark-the school’s first unbeaten season since 1980 and first-ever 10-win campaign. In three seasons, DuBose is 19-1 all-time in SCAC games; 26-6 overall.
Bowser, a 5-8, 190-pound freshman running back from Pass Christian, Miss., had a team-high 11 combined touchdowns for the Majors (six rushing, five receiving) this season.
