Pope John Paul II’s Jaguars won the 14th annual Pearl River Soccer Invitational Tournament Division I title. The tourney was Wednesday through Saturday.

PJP went 4-0 in the tournament and defeated Hahnville 3-2 in the championship game as Mark Brink scored the winning goal with about five minutes left on a rebound from a shot by Sidney Corwin, who had two goals.

PJP trailed, 2-0, at halftime of the title match, but Corwin netted two goals to tie the match. Andrew Morse assisted on both goals.

Jaguars’ coach Jack Mills said Tyler Lusignan and Drew Harding were his top defenders.

Mills also said winning the tournament was a great.

“It was a confidence builder,” Mills said. “First off, we weren’t supposed to win. We beat them (Hahnville) Saturday morning and then we beat them again in the afternoon.”

Mills said despite his team being down 2-0 at halftime, they were still confident.

The tournament featured 12 teams, including local squads PJP, Pearl River and Northlake Christian School. PRHS and NCS were in Division II.

The teams were broken up into four brackets and two divisions. Division I was brackets one and two, while Division II included brackets three and four.

In Division II, Destrehan blanked De La Salle, 3-0, for the title.

The Jaguars run began with a 5-4 victory over East St. John behind a hat trick by Morse.

Corwin added a pair of goals for the Jags and Drew Harding was named PJP’s top defender.

PJP then came back on Saturday morning and shutout Hahnville, 1-0.

The match was scoreless at halftime, but Corwin scored the lone goal in the second half to propel Pope John Paul II to victory. Coach Mills named Tyler Lusignan his top defender.

Later the same day, the Jaguars continued its solid defensive play by blanking St. Charles Catholic, 2-0, before heading to the championship. Corwin tallied a first-half goal and Jon Price added another in the second half for the scoring. Harding was named the top defender.

NCS tied all three matches during the tournament. The Wolverines began competition on Wednesday by tying Pearl River, 1-1.

Kevin Pence tallied for the Wolverines, while Ernesto Armador netted the lone goal for the Rebels. NCS named Jeffrey George the top defender. Pearl River top defenders were Kevin Dancer and Will Reed.

The Wolverines then played De La Salle to a scoreless match on Saturday morning.

Later on Saturday, the Wolverines knotted Metairie Park Country Day at 1-1.

Christian Landry scored for NCS. Zak Smith was named the top defender for the Wolverines.

Pearl River went 0-2-1 for the tournament.

The Rebels opened by tying NCS 1-1 on Wednesday. Then Pearl River suffered a 3-1 loss against Destrehan on Saturday.

Vincent Piazza scored PRHS’ goal and Dancer was named the top defender. On Saturday afternoon, the Rebels fell to De La Salle 1-0.

Pearl River coach Bob DeVall said he was happy with the way the event went.

“I had a lot of comments from other teams that it was a good tournament. It had good teams, competition and they were hoping to come back next year,” DeVall said.
