Covington blanks Hammond

Covington’s Chris Cassaday scored the game’s only goal in the 38th minute of play Tuesday, assisted by Stephen Baudean, to carry the Lions to a 1-0 home district victory over the Hammond Tornadoes. CHS named Luke Baudean as its top defender with Matt Magee posting the shut out in goal. CHS (6-2-2) upped its district record to 2-1.

Slidell loses

to Ponchatoula

Slidell’s Tigers suffered a 4-2 setback against Ponchatoula in a district match Tuesday at SHS. SHS (1-3-1) is 0-3 in district play.

Ponchatoula took a 1-0 lead about 10 minutes in, but two minutes later, Trevon Poole found Cody Leake, who scored to tie the match at 1-1.

Ponchatoula scored with about 10 minutes left in the first half to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.

In the 55th minute, the Green Wave extended its lead to 3-1, but Slidell’s Tony Broussard tallied in the 70th minute to make it 3-2. Ponchatoula added one more goal to pick up the win.

SHS coach James Gipson named Kevin Roe his top defender.

Salmen outlasted by Riverdale

Salmen’s Spartans suffered a tough, 1-0, overtime loss to Riverdale in the district opener held on the road Tuesday. Salmen is 0-4 this season.

The Spartans out shot Riverdale, 30-8, but the Rebels’ last one went in during the eighth minute of overtime.

Salmen coach Tim Rogers declined to name a top defender calling Tuesday’s performance a team effort.

PJP II falls in

district opener

Pope John Paul II dropped its district opener to St. Thomas Aquinas on the road Wednesday despite two goals by Jon Price. The Jaguars are 6-3-2 this season. St. Thomas led 2-0 after 15 minutes of play.

The Jaguars cut the lead in half during the 25th minute on Price’s first tally.

St. Thomas added another one in the 30th minute and took a 3-1 advantage to halftime.

In the second half, Price pulled PJP closer when he scored the final goal in the 60th minute on an assist from Sidney Corwin.

PJP coach Jack Mills named Drew Harding his top defender.

Girls

CHS’ Newman scores hat trick

Covington’s Amelia Newman recorded a hat trick in a 7-1-district victory over Hammond Tuesday at CHS. The Lady Lions (2-8), who led 5-1 at halftime, are 1-2 in district play.

Jen Watkins tallied a pair of goals, while getting three assists for Covington. Devan Perez and Devon Radecker each netted goals for CHS. Claire Montgomery had an assist. Erin Blackwell was named the Lady Lions’ top defender.

Pearl River falls

to Cabrini

Pearl River’s Lady Rebels lost to Cabrini, 6-1, in the district opener Tuesday at PRHS. Pearl River is 2-2-1 this year. PRHS’ lone goal came from Kim Treese on a pass from Mary Beth Ohlenforst.

SSA bombs

Slidell

St. Scholastica Academy senior Kelly Gautreaux registered four goals with senior Tricia Johnson and sophomore Ashley Martinez netting two goals each Friday as the Doves ran past SHS 10-0 in district play at SSA. The Doves (4-1) moved to 2-0 in district play. Slidell (1-3) slipped to 0-2 in district play. Gautreaux tallied her first goal in the initial minute of play off an assist by Elise Gagnon, who recorded three assists. Ten minutes later, Gautreaux notched another goal, assisted by Martinez. The Doves’ Martinez made it 3-0 on a penalty kick in the 14th minute. Johnson scored the next two goals assisted by Gagnon in the 22nd minute and Lauren Salles in the 27th minute. Two minutes later, Gautreaux recorded the hat trick assisted by Johnson. Gautreaux polished off her fourth goal two minutes later with an assist from Danielle Beatty. Martinez pushed the Doves’ lead to 8-0 with a goal assisted by Rachael Zibilich in the 37th minute. SSA tacked on two goals in the second half with Salles scoring at the 44-minute mark assisted by Gagnon. Freshman Lindsey Achary closed out the scoring in the 57th minute assisted by Emily Bruce. Senior goalkeeper Lindsey Schwaner notched the victory and was replaced by sophomore Sara Kuebel midway through the second half.

MHS edges Ponchatoula

Mandeville’s Lady Skippers trimmed the Ponchatoula Lady Green Wave 2-1 Friday night in district play at the Swamp. After surrendering a second half goal on PHS’ only shot of the match, Mandeville rallied to beat back the challenge from the Lady Green Wave. Rachelle Giroir scored to even the match in the 65th minute, and 10 minutes later she would send a lofting ball across the penalty box to freshman Abby Schmidt, who headed home the game-winner for the Lady Skippers. Kirstin Kellar was the top defender for MHS.
