St. Paul’s junior Jonathan Schoen knocked down a clutch 3-pointer with just 2.2 ticks left to give the Wolves a hard fought, 50-47, victory over the John Ehret Patriots Friday afternoon during the Bulldog Classic.

The game was tied 47-47 following a St. Paul’s timeout with 21 seconds left. Schoen drew a pass from Jeff Coote deep in the right corner with the clock winding down, then he raised up and drained his trey. Schoen, who scored a basket in the first quarter, finished with five points.

“I didn’t think we were going to get a better look than that, so I just threw it up, and it went in,” Schoen said.

Derek Arnold and Josh White led the Wolves’ attack with 13 points each. White clicked on three 3-pointers. Luke Baumgartner added seven points, and Will Gensler finished with five.

Arnold (5-foot-10), who led the Wolves on the boards, said it is always a tough battle when you play against bigger people.

“You have to get in there and battle with them. We were able to hit a few more outside shots in the second half. This was a good team effort for us,” Arnold said.

SPS upped its record to 6-4. John Ehret (5-4) got a game-high 22 points from Jeremy Smith. The Wolves didn’t have an answer for Smith, who scored in each quarter. He had eight points in the first half before scoring six in the third quarter and eight in the fourth.

Ehret’s Jacoby Reed added nine points for the Patriots, and Darius Foucher finished with five.

SPS built a 14-11 first-quarter lead with White leading the way with eight points, connecting on two treys. The Wolves took a 24-22 halftime lead with White adding five points in the second quarter. With St. Paul’s leading 16-15, Gensler hit a basket and was fouled. He made the free throw for a four-point lead with 3:55 left in the half.

Ehret’s Devin Ovide made a lay up with 5:28 left in third quarter to tie the game 26-26. Ovide made another shot to give Ehret a two-point lead.

St. Paul’s answered with Arnold scoring the next five points to give the Wolves a 31-28 advantage with 3:38 left in the period. Later in the quarter, SPS trailed 34-33 when Jeffery Herbert hit a basket with 2:45 remaining in the period. Jeff Coote delivered a 3-pointer for the final points of the quarter to give the Wolves a 36-34 lead.

St. Paul’s Baumgartner finished with five points in the final quarter. The Wolves trailed 45-43 when Jared Buhler knocked down two critical free throws to tie the contest with 2:16 left. Following an Ehret time out, Reed tallied on a lay up to give the Patriots the lead with only 1:26 to go.

SPS’ Arnold came up big with a basket to retie the game at 47-47. Coote made an excellent defensive play, forcing an Ehret turnover with only 40 ticks left to set the stage for Schoen’s game-winning 3-pointer.

St. Paul’s opened the Bulldog Classic Wednesday taking a 58-43 victory over the Pearl River Rebels. Morgan Wells led the Wolves with 15 points followed by Coote with 14. Baumgartner finished with 11 and Gensler added seven. St. Paul’s connected on 23-of-29 free throws (79.3 percent).
