This season’s basketball team got off to a rough start but was 5-6 heading into Friday’s game with Salmen after winning three-of-four.
Slidell first-year coach Dale Chimento talked about Williams.
“Armand is a very coachable young man,” Chimento said. “He has a lot of athletic skill.”
In track last year, Williams had a good season. He won the high jump in the district meet, jumping 6 feet, 2 inches, and finished fourth during the regionals in the high jump (6-3).
During the Parish Meet, which was shortened due to rain and lightning in the area, Williams won the high jump (6-2) and took runner-up in the long jump (21-4).
What do you enjoy most about playing your sports? I learn a lot of life situations when I play ball. I think it’s going to help me out more personally than just physically in all the things in the game.
What do you like best about being a student athlete? It’s kind of hard, but at the end of the day, I feel better. Right before I eat my dinner and I think about the things I did at school with football and basketball, I really feel good about myself.
Do you feel an added responsibility of being a role model as a student athlete? Yes, to the freshmen, sophomores and all the underclassmen under me. I feel like whatever I do positive, they’ll do the same and they’ll do the same to the people under them. I feel I have an effect.
Most memorable game in sports? The Ponchatoula game my sophomore year when I made two one-handed catches in the end zone. I like that one. (Slidell won the game, 38-13, and Williams caught nine passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns.)
Who has been the most influential person in your school sports career? Coach (Mike) Wills, my receiving coach, because he’s taught me a lot. When I came in as a freshman, they moved me up to varsity and I couldn’t run a route at all. I had all the athletic ability, I had the hops, I had the speed and all he needed, but I didn’t know how to run a route. When he was teaching me how to run routes, he taught me life situations about things, and it really helped me out a lot.
Who is your favorite athlete? New England Patriots’ wide receiver Randy Moss.
Favorite team? New York Giants.
What is your favorite subject in school? Geometry. I love math.
Plans after high school and college major? I want to go to college for computer technology and probably do stuff like graphics making. Now that I can see that a lot of coaches are looking for me for football, I would like to continue to play football.
Favorite sports movie, TV show, actor and actress? “Friday Night Lights,” “Family Guy.” Steven Seagal and Angelina Jolie.
Favorite type of music? R&B.
Favorite food dish? Potatoes and steak.
Best vacation? I went to an AAU tournament in Orlando. I went with basically the whole AAU team.
Best thing about living on the Northshore? It’s a lot better than New Orleans. After the hurricane, I came down here my freshman year. I really do like the Northshore and what it’s done for me.
Hobbies/interests/volunteering: If I’m not doing something for school, I’m running routes. If it’s not football-related, I’m shooting ball. If it’s not basketball-related, I’m working on my high jump or long jump. Everything comes down to sports with me. Also, I work at a camp at Our Lady of Lourdes as a counselor for kids for 24 days in the summer. I like helping out the kids.
Parents: Minnette Williams of Slidell and Ephran Hill of New Orleans.
