Pearl River freshman Gabe Wiley scored 16 points and senior guard Chris Simon delivered 15 points to lead the Rebels past the Northshore Panthers, 56-45, in the Fontainebleau Bulldog Classic Friday night.

PRHS (2-6) only had five players make it into the scoring column, but it was enough as its seniors came up big with Eric Mavor finishing with 10 points followed by Jacob Maxwell with nine and Jeremy Lang with six.

Simon said he and his teammates played hard to pull off the victory.

“Our seniors stepped up this game. It’s about time we got a victory because we have been losing some close games early in the year. We needed this one,” Simon said.

“This is a pretty big win for us. Our confidence level will go way up,” Simon added.

Northshore (0-7) held a 30-24 halftime lead. Panthers’ senior guard Christian Ruiz topped three NHS players in double figures with 14 points. Ruiz connected on four 3-pointers in the first half, two in each quarter. Chandler Brown finished with 12 points, including two treys in the second quarter. Jervious Epherson added 11 points, making three 3-pointers. Archie Ambo added six points.

Pearl River raced out to an 8-0 run before Northshore got on the board with an Ambo basket at the 4:58 mark. Bailey got the Rebels off to a quick start, scoring nine points in the opening quarter to take an 18-11 advantage.

Northshore made the most of its 3-point attempts in the second period, hitting five treys to outscore Pearl River 19-6 and take a 30-24 halftime lead.

Simon netted five of Pearl River’s eight points in the third quarter as the Rebels outscored the Panthers 8-6 to make it a 36-32 game.

With five minutes left, Brown hit a jumper for Northshore to tie the game at 40-40, and Pearl River took control at that point with the Rebels scoring 11 consecutive points. NHS’ Ambo finally broke the run with a basket, but the Panthers trailed, 51-42.

PRHS’ Simon and Wiley scored seven points each in the final quarter with Mavor and Maxwell hitting four points each.

The Rebels hit on 6-of-10 free throws in the final quarter.

PRHS’ Mavor said his club did what it planned to do.

“We played fundamental basketball. We did a good job late in the game controlling the basketball. We didn’t turn it over. The seniors stepped up, and we took care of the boards,” Mavor said.

Pearl River took care of the ball down the stretch and hit on 6-of-10 free throws in the final period to help secure the victory.

The Rebels fell to St. Paul’s, 58-43, in the tourney opener Wednesday. Simon led the Rebels with 15 points, followed by Lang with 10. Maxwell and Wiley added six points each. PRHS was called for a total of 28 team fouls with three players fouling out.

Pearl River trailed 29-24 at the half.
