Pope John Paul II captured the De La Salle Tournament title after defeating Grace King, 58-49, in overtime Saturday.

Covington went 2-1 in the tournament. PJP was 11-2 at Tuesday’s press time, while CHS was 10-5.

In the finals, Grace King led 22-15 at halftime. The Jaguars came back and the game went to overtime tied at 45-45.

Ryan Palmisano scored 22 points, while Scott Joffe tallied 19 and Joel Price had eight. Matt Binder added eight points in the win.

PJP opened the tournament Thursday by beating Ben Franklinton, 58-30.

Binder led the Jaguars with 14 points, while Joffe posted 13, Price recorded 11 and Taylor Davie scored nine.

In the semifinals Saturday, PJP beat Chalmette, 56-51.

Price topped the Jags with 19 points.

Joffe and Davie each tallied 12 point, and Binder scored eight points.

CHS lost to Chalmette, 72-69, in its opener Friday despite having four players in double figures, led by Joel Bailey with 18.

Phillip Bickham netted 14, followed by Darren Lee with 13 and Terrance Singleton with 12.

Jordan Bedford and Marquis Porter chipped in with five points each for the Lions.

Chalmette also had balanced scorer with Riley Stafford leading all scorers with 20 points.

Josh Major delivered 18 for the Owls, followed by Terrian Williams with 16.

CHS coach Mike Smith said his club had its opportunities to win. With less than a minute remaining, CHS trailed by one but failed to convert a lay up.

“We squandered another opportunity to tie it at the free throw line. We were fouled shooting a 3-pointer with less than two seconds on the clock. We missed all three,” Smith said.

In Covington’s second game Friday, the Lions manhandled Ben Franklin, 90-43, led by Bedford’s 19 points.

The Lions had another balanced scoring effort with Bailey adding 17 and Phillip Bickham and Singleton delivering 14 points each. Lee contributed nine points and Porter added seven.

In Saturday’s contest, CHS downed St. Martin’s, 63-37, behind Bedford’s game-high 26 points.

Jarius Bickham scored 12 points, followed by his brother, Phillip, with 10.

The Lions took an 11-4 first-quarter lead, and they were up 22-15 at the half.

Covington blew the game open in the fourth quarter, outscoring St. Martin’s 30-10.
