St. Paul’s blanks Pontchatoula

St. Paul’s blanked the Ponchatoula Green Wave, 3-0, Monday in a district match played at Hunter Stadium.

SPS’ Blake Sellers scored eight minutes into the first half with a header off a corner kick by Scott Mayer to give the Wolves a 1-0 halftime lead. The Wolves’ Zack Perret netted a goal 25 minutes into the second half from 18 yards out. Juan Amaya tallied the Wolves’ final goal with seven minutes left.

St Paul’s (7-2) remained unbeaten in district play at 4-0, heading

into yesterday’s district match against Covington.  

St. Paul’s winning goalkeeper Bryan Bowers had one save to record the shut out. St. Paul’s named Mark Caragliano its defensive player of the game. Wolves’ coach Trevor Watkins said Ponchatoula played an excellent defensive game. Ponchatoula goalie Corey Morse recorded 11 saves for the Green Wave. PHS selected Cole Cummings its top defender.

SPS downs NHS

in overtime

St. Paul’s Wolves defeated a stubborn Northshore Panther squad 2-0 Saturday in overtime in a rescheduled district match played at NHS. SPS’ Anthony Saltalamaccia and Seth Hagan notched the goals in overtime.

Wolves’ junior goalkeeper Bryan Bowers recorded the shut out victory and was credited with four saves. Joey Mingo was named the Wolves’ top defender.

SPS assistant coach Hector Vasquez credited Northshore with having a strong defensive line, which made it difficult to score. “We just kept going after them. It was a hard fought contest for both teams,” Vasquez said. 

Northshore coach Ryan Lazaroe credited his defense with an outstanding effort. “We defended well as a team,” he said.

NHS goalkeeper Chris Davis recorded 17 saves.

FHS blanks

Slidell

Fontainebleau shut down Slidell Friday, 10-0, sparked by a Sal Bavido hat trick in district play at the Dawg Pound.

FHS (9-0-1) moved to 4-0 in district play heading into yesterday’s road match with Ponchatoula.

FHS’ Brett Duncan opened the scoring in the seventh minute and also added a later goal. Bavido cranked things up, tallying three consecutive breakaway goals in just a five-minute span. Bavido netted his goals in the 10th, 13th and 15th minutes of play. Dakoriye Charles, Reed Mulford, Cole Mullin, Dolapo Ogunniyi and Lucas Rader also scored. FHS named Andrew Tykol its top defender and Matt Harris posted the shut out in goal.

The Bulldogs limited Slidell to just two shots in the match. FHS took 15 shots on goal in the first half taking an 8-0 halftime lead. 

Bulldogs’ coach Budd Ditchendorf said he was happy to see his club come out of the gate so forcefully. “We had been starting way too slow in our last two or three games, allowing teams to get comfortable against us,” Ditchendorf said.

NHS trims

Covington

Northshore defeated Covington, 4-2, Friday in a district match played at NHS. Lamar Yeates had two goals to lead the Panthers. Tyler Morrison and Steve Morrison collected one goal each in the victory. NHS (5-3) moved to 2-2 in district going into yesterday’s road match with Mandeville.

CHS (6-3-2) was 2-2 in district play heading into yesterday’s match with St. Paul’s. The Lions got goals from Luke Baudean and Ronald Garay. CHS named Chris Mansfield its top defender.

Pope John Paul II wins in overtime

Pope John Paul II’s Andrew Morse scored the winning goal, assisted by Ryan Cadard, in the ninth minute of overtime and helped his team pull off a 3-2 victory over Independence in a district road game Saturday. PJP (7-3-2) evened its district record at 1-1.

PJP’s Sidney Corwin took a pass from Morse and scored to put the Jags up 1-0. Independence countered to tie the match. PJP’s Jon Price netted a goal on an assist from Cadard to give the Jaguars a 2-1 halftime lead. Independence tied the match at 2-2 sending the contest to overtime. PJP coach Jack Mills named Drew Harding his top defender.

Salmen beats

East Jefferson

Victor Arroyo’s second-half goal with about seven minutes left proved to be the winner in a 2-1 Salmen victory over East Jefferson in a home district match Friday.

David Diaz assisted on Arroyo’s winning goal.

Salmen (1-4) is 1-1 in district play.

The Warriors got on the board first during the opening half on an indirect kick.

Salmen answered when John Wintzell shook a defender and beat the East Jefferson goalkeeper for the goal. Salmen out shot East Jefferson 30-10. Salmen coach Tim Rogers said goalkeeper Tyler Webber and Chris Gulino played well for the Spartans.

NCS 2-1 in Copa Acadia Tourney

Northlake Christian School’s Wolverines finished with a 2-1 record in the Copa Acadia Tournament in Lafayette Friday and Saturday. NCS (8-2-3) was blanked by University High of Baton Rouge, 2-0, Friday. University High tallied both goals in the first half. NCS named Kevin Pence its top defender.

University High took 12 shots on goal, while the Wolverines attempted nine shots.

NCS came back Saturday to blank Opelousas High, 6-0, with Danny Haar and Zander St. Pierre scoring two goals each. Blake Staley and Ryan Castille added one goal each to the Wolverines’ attack. Wolverines’ freshman goalkeeper Jeffrey George earned the shut out, with Sam Beck being named the top defender.

In their final tournament game Saturday, NCS edged Comeaux, 2-1, with Haar netting both goals. Comeaux scored first in the 20th minute.

Haar answered with a goal in the 27th minute to tie the match. Haar blasted in the game-winner in the 50th minute for the Wolverines. George earned the victory in goal, with freshman Mallery Mele being selected the NCS’ top defender.
