Northshore and Mandeville played 100 minutes of scoreless action in district play Tuesday night at MHS with two 40-minute halves and then a pair of 10-minute overtimes.

The match went into a shootout, and Northshore won, 5-4. It’ll go down as a 1-0 victory.

In the shootout, each team had five-penalty kicks, and Mandeville went first. It was tied at 4-4, and Northshore had one final opportunity to win the match.

Sophomore Will Mussack stepped up and nailed the back of the net, helping the Panthers grab a big win.

“All that was on my mind was that I’ve gotta make it, and we win,” Mussack said.

Mussack said he had not been in that situation in a while. Mussack said the last time he missed. He admitted it did cross his mind.

“It was (going through my mind) that I was going to miss, but I just put it in my head that I was going to make it, and it went in,” Mussack said.

The victory made NHS (6-3) 3-2 in district, while Mandeville (7-5) fell to 2-3 in district play.

In the shootout, Mandeville’s Beau DeGruy began by getting the first goal, then Northshore’s Chris Mannella hit to tie it at 1-1.

Mandeville’s Aaron Noelke then missed, but NHS’ Chase Tomlin gave the Panthers a 2-1 lead. MHS’ Brad Cieslinski tied things at 2-2 before the Panthers’ Kyle Hoppens was good. Mandeville’s Kyle Oberman knotted the shootout at 3-3, but NHS’ Tyler Morrison gave his team a 4-3 advantage.

The Skippers tied it once again with Chris Campbell hitting, setting up Mussack for the exciting finish.

Northshore coach Ryan Lazaroe said he is proud of his team for getting the victory.

“We tried a lot of new things out to be a little more attacking minded,” Lazaroe said. “It worked, and I plan on using it for the rest of this season.”

Both teams had scoring chances throughout, but Northshore goalkeeper Chris Davis and Mandeville keeper Hall Lyons came up big throughout the night.

In the first half, Mandeville had a golden opportunity to score during the 35th minute.

Logan Sullivan headed the ball to DeGruy, who was 1-on-1 with Davis.

DeGruy took a shot that Davis saved. The rebound came back to DeGruy to shoot again, but Davis saved this time with no rebound.

In the second half, both teams had opportunities to score but couldn’t get the ball in the net, sending the game to overtime.

In the first OT, Mussack had a chance to give his team the advantage, but sent the ball over the crossbar.

In the second overtime, Mandeville had a direct kick that was no good.

Neither team tallied, and the match went to the shootout.

For the match, Northshore out shot Mandeville 12-10. The Panthers put nine shots on goal to the Skippers’ six.

MHS coach John Moss talked about the match.

“We could’ve finished early, and we could’ve finished late, but the ball didn’t bounce our way. Stuff happens,” Moss said. “Our keeper (Lyons) played a very good game, and the player that missed the goal is a great player, and he’s one of our leading scorers. Some days it is your day, and some days it isn’t.”
