Pearl River senior Katie Guido plays forward for the Lady Rebels’ basketball team.

This season, PRHS is 8-6.

Guido is averaging 8.9 points and seven rebounds per game this season.

Last year, Guido was a first-team all-district player for 9-4A. During district, Guido averaged 9.4 points per game and 8.6 rebounds.

Guido also takes care of her work in the classroom, holding a 3.8 weighted grade point average. She takes one honors class in English.

Pearl River coach Lee Williams said Guido is good about getting rebounds and putting offensive boards back in.

“That’s huge,” Williams said. “She blocks out really good underneath the goal. She’s learned a lot. From the day she got here to today, she has improved so much.”

What do you enjoy most about playing basketball? The physical aspect. I always feel better after I workout. I just like being in shape.

What do you like best about being a student athlete? It’s definitely challenging. You go from a game to like McBeth or Shakesphere, try to analyze it and your brain is just fried from the game.

Do you feel an added responsibility of being a role model as a student athlete? I do because I see people, they go home, watch TV and go to bed without doing any homework and then they’re like, ‘I was busy last night.’ And I’m like, ‘doing what? I mean, step it up.’

Most memorable game in sports? Last year’s Slidell game. I had four fouls and the lowest points I ever had, but we beat them in the last second of overtime. Since I’ve been here, we had never beaten them. It was back-and-forth the entire time.

Who has been the most influential person in your school sports career? I couldn’t pick just one person. There are so many that have been there throughout the entire time. (She said if she had to pick a few of them she said she’d pick her current coaches Lee Williams, Julian Carter and Courtney Kemp because they’ve all made a difference.)

Favorite team? New Orleans Saints.

What is your favorite subject in school? English.

Plans after high school/college major? I plan on going to college and majoring in elementary education. I’m seriously leaning toward Southeastern.

Favorite sports movie/TV show/actor/actress? “Coach Carter,” “House.” Samuel L. Jackson and Julia Roberts.

Favorite type of music? Alternative Rock.

Favorite food dish? Tacos.

Best vacation? Jamaica. I was in fifth grade and it was all relaxation. It was just, go with the flow. Nothing bad would ever happen because if something happened, it was no big deal. (Guido said she went with her parents.)

Best thing about living on the Northshore? I like the environment, the trees and the country. I like the city, but I don’t like it because I don’t see a lot of green. I’m definitely country in that way. I love seeing trees, whether they’re pine or oak.

Hobbies/interests/volunteering: Guido said she has her pilot’s license and is working on her ratings, which would certify her to fly bigger planes. (She also said she likes to play computer games. Guido flies out of the Hammond airport.)

I do occasionally help at my church with Vacation Bible School.

Parents: Michael and DeDe Guido of Covington.
