St. Paul’s senior soccer player Scott Mayer serves as a tri-captain for the Wolves selected by his teammates. Mayer has netted three goals with four assists helping SPS to a 10-4-1 record.

St. Paul’s head soccer coach Trevor Watkins said Mayer is respected by his teammates. “Scott is viewed as a leader by his teammates, thus they selected him as a team captain.

Watkins described Mayer as a threatening player. “Scott is energetic and gives the opponent fits with his quickness. He is an offensive catalyst for us,” Watkins said.

“He makes things happen. He makes things dangerous for the opposing team. He typically is one of our leading scorers, but this season he hasn’t had much of an opportunity to do that,” Watkins added.

Mayer described himself as a dedicated soccer player.

“I really enjoy playing the game. I’m quick being able to use my speed down the line. I don’t have the best touch, but I manage,” Mayer said.

“As a team captain, I do my best to bring leadership to the team.”

What do you enjoy most about playing soccer? I enjoy the bonds that are made between my teammates. I enjoy the glory of winning, especially being a part of the St. Paul’s soccer tradition.

What do you like best about being a student athlete? Being a team captain I enjoy being around my teammates both on the field and in the school setting.

Do you feel an added responsibility of being a role model as a student athlete? You have to be able to manage your time wisely. You have to always make good choices.

Most memorable game? That would have to be during my sophomore year when we played Jesuit in the 2007 state finals. We didn’t win (2-0), but I was a starter as a sophomore. Having an opportunity to play in the state finals was special.

Who is your favorite athlete? I don’t have a favorite athlete, but I enjoy watching football the most.

Favorite team? New Orleans Saints.

What is your favorite subject in school? Math. I’ve always had a head for math. It has always come to me pretty easily.

Plans after high school/college major? I’m not sure where I want to attend college, but I plan on going somewhere out of state. I want to major in business.

Favorite TV show/actor/actress? “Law,” Johnny Depp and Rachel McAdams.

Favorite type of music? Alternative rock.

Favorite food dish? My grandmother’s fish and chips.

Best vacation? Spring 2008 break at Destin, Fla.

Best thing about living on the Northshore? It has a small town atmosphere, but at the same time it offers everything that a big town has. I like it being close to New Orleans.

Hobbies/interests/volunteering: I like playing the guitar. I’m not extremely talented, but I guess I’m okay. I can play a little bit. I also enjoy reading lots of magazines like Time and ESPN The Magazine. I volunteered this past summer at the Heritage Manor old folks home in Mandeville.

Parents: Marty and Teri Mayer of Mandeville.
