Locals compete in Mississippi

Salmen’s Spartans and the Slidell Tigers each went 2-0 in the Picayune Tournament. Fontainebleau was 1-1 and Northshore finished 0-2 in the event held Monday and Tuesday. Salmen (13-2) captured both games in blowout fashion.

The Spartans opened with an 81-42 victory over Fontainebleau on Monday.

Daron Populist led Salmen with 19 points, while Isiah Tate tallied 15 and R.J. Scott posted 10.

Matt Orlando led FHS with 11 points. Quin Cooper added nine, while Jason Green and Taylor Hanby each registered eight.

Salmen came back on Tuesday and defeated Hancock Central, 85-42, behind Scott’s 27 points.

Harrison scored 10, while Populist and Tate each posted nine.

FHS won its second game, 63-44, over Picayune behind Cooper’s 20 points.

Orlando added 12 points and Hanby contributed 10.

Like Salmen, Slidell (9-8) also won both its games by a lot. The Tigers opened by beating Hancock, 73-26, on Monday.

Tevin Parker led the Tigers with 19 points, while Logan Jordan tallied 13. Alex Hill and Armand Williams each finished with seven.

Slidell then defeated Northshore 56-37 on Tuesday.

Parker topped Slidell with 15 points, while Kenyati Crisp scored 14 and Jordan put in 11.

Michael Lewis led NHS with 20 points. Chris Ruiz had nine and Nick Prange added five.

Northshore (1-13) began the competition by falling to Picayune, 47-38, on Monday.

The Panthers trailed 30-27 after the third quarter. Michael Lewis led NHS with 11 points, while Chris Ruiz tallied nine and Jared Harrison added seven.

SPS posts 2-2

in shootout

St. Paul’s Wolves posted a 2-2 record in the Sunkist Shootout held at St. Thomas More in Lafayette during the Christmas holidays. St. Paul’s (11-8) opened Friday Dec. 26 with a 44-41 victory over Catholic High of New Iberia. Junior Luke Baumgartner netted the game-winner as he drained a three-pointer from deep in the left corner with just five seconds remaining off an assist by Jeff Coote. Baumgartner finished with six points and three assists. Jonathan Schoen topped the Wolves with 16 points. St. Paul’s fell to Many High School 67-63 in last Saturday’s contest. Josh White tallied 17 points including five 3-pointers for the Wolves. Coote netted 11 points followed by Baumgartner with 10 points and three steals.

St. Paul’s came back last Sunday to defeat Lafayette High 61-48 sparked by White with 13 points and seven rebounds. Baumgartner contributed 13 points followed by Will Gensler with 11 points on 5-of-5 shooting from the field. Derek Arnold added 10 points and three assists in the Wolves’ balanced attack. The Wolves closed out their tournament play Monday losing to Midfield, Ala., 53-45 in what St. Paul’s coach Mike Toups referred to as a lackluster performance to finish in sixth place in the 16-team field. Schoen led the Wolves with 11 points. Arnold and Baumgartner finished with eight points and three rebounds each. Morgan Wells chipped in with six points and five assists.

St. Paul’s opens District 7-5A play Tuesday, hosting the Mandeville Skippers.

Hannan takes third in tourney

Archbishop Hannan’s Hawks posted a 2-1 record in the Ridgewood Tournament held in Metairie. The Hawks defeated the Patrick Taylor Tigers 61-41 in their opening game last Saturday. Eddie Laine topped the Hawks with 15 points. Pat Munger and Michael Hess contributed 10 points each. The Hawks jumped out to an early 15-point lead and cruised the rest of the way. On Tuesday, Hannan fell to the Pine Raiders 63-43. After pulling to within three points of the lead in the third quarter, Pine went on a 14-0 run to finish off the Hawks in a semi-final game.

Laine led the Hawks with nine points followed by Hess, Chad Boihem and Ben Condon with eight points each. Munger added seven points and nine rebounds. Later on Tuesday, Hannan came back to down Holy Rosary 69-56 to take third place in the tourney behind Munger’s double-double. Munger, who finished with 20 points and pulled down 20 rebounds, was named to the all-tournament team. Munger was superb throughout the tourney, finishing with a total of 37 points and 35 rebounds in the Hawks’ three games.

Laine tallied 12 points and dished off seven assists in the victory over Holy Rosary, while Condon chipped in with nine points and nine boards. The Hawks raced out to a 15-point first quarter lead.

Hannan (5-6) opens district play Tuesday on the road against Desire Street Academy.

PRHS goes 1-1 in own tournament

Pearl River split its two games in the Pearl River Tournament held Dec. 22 and 23.

The Rebels opened the competition on Dec. 22 with a 48-45 victory over Northshore behind Jacob Maxwell’s double-double. He scored 14 points and pulled down 19 rebounds.

Eric Mavor tallied 11 points and Lonnie Hayes registered 10.

NHS’ David Heumann led the Panthers with 15 points, while Chris Ruiz and Michael Lewis each recorded eight.

Pearl River then lost to Belle Chasse the next day, 65-59, in a game the Rebels trailed 35-17 at halftime.

Maxwell had 16 points, while Chris Simon had 14 and Jeremy Lang added 10.

Northshore’s second game was a 67-44 loss to Franklinton despite Lewis having 16 points and 19 rebounds on Dec. 23.

Chandler Brown scored nine points and Ruiz contributed five.
