Pearl River sophomore Adler Tonan recorded a hat trick by scoring the Rebels’ final three goals as PRHS won its fourth straight match in a 5-2 victory over Pope John Paul II Saturday in wet weather conditions at PJP.

The win moved Pearl River (6-5-6) above the .500-mark, while PJP slipped to 8-6-2.

Pearl River coach Bob DeVall said it was a good win for his club.

“It’s really a big thing because we’ve tied so many that we didn’t have enough games in the win column,” DeVall said.

The match was knotted at 1-1 by halftime, but the fans that braved the weather got to see a multitude of goals in the second half.

In the 53rd minute, the Rebels took a 2-1 advantage when Vincent Piazza took a shot that hit the crossbar, but Kevin Dancer was there to put his team in the lead.

Just one minute later, the Jaguars responded when Houston Oakes sent a pass to Jon Price and from the left side of the field, Price tied the contest with a shot toward the middle of the goal.

Then Pearl River turned up the pressure. Tonan took a shot that was saved in the 56th minute.

Three minutes later, Tonan nearly scored, but PJP goalkeeper Travis Brink made a juggling save.

Finally, in the 60th minute, the hard work paid off as Tonan received a pass from Jesse Elorriaga and Tonan took a shot that hit off of Brink and into the goal for his first tally.

Tonan talked about the goal.

“That was a pretty good shot,” Tonan said. “The grass is wet, so the ball got faster and I scored.”

Tonan was back at it in the 75th to make it 4-2 and he completed the hat trick in the 78th minute, sealing the win.

Pearl River senior Patrick Charbonnet was the Rebels’ top defender.

PJP coach Jack Mills, who named Zach Goodnow his top defender, said he was happy with his team’s performance for most of the match.

“Up until the end, we played pretty well,” Mills said. “In the end, we just played kickball and you can’t do that.”

In the first half, Pope John Paul II scored the opening goal when Teddy Macke took a shot from the middle of the field that hit off the PRHS goalkeeper and went in.

In the 28th minute, the Rebels tied the match on a direct kick. Tonan ran up for it and faked the kick. Piazza did attempt the shot and tallied inside the left post.
