A Slidell man who died Saturday when he failed to negotiate a curve off Oak Harbor Boulevard in Slidell and plunged his car into a canal was identified Tuesday as a 19-year-old film student.

Bryan Jackson Gay, a sophomore studying cinematography at Emerson College in Boston, was visiting his family in Slidell when the wreck occurred about 7:30 p.m. Saturday, according to an obituary and Sheriff’s Office spokesman George Bonnett.

While turning near the boulevard, Gay’s tires caught the embankment and his vehicle slid into the canal, Bonnett said.

A nearby pedestrian, who witnessed the accident, jumped into the water to try and save him but couldn’t pull Gay from the wreckage, he said.

More than a dozen Sheriff’s Office certified divers later joined the effort and combed the canal. Gay’s body was brought to the surface about 45 minutes later, about 8:15 p.m., Bonnett said. At the same time and just miles away, a Moss Point, Miss., man died in a motorcycle accident, Louisiana State Police said.

The man, Windell R. Stacy, 41, failed to negotiate a curve and skidded to the ground while traveling eastbound on Interstate 10 near Slidell.

While his 2006 Suzuki slid to the right lane, Stacy’s body tumbled into the right shoulder into the path of an oncoming Chevrolet Malibu, driven by Gladys G. Tart, 56, of Gulfport, Miss. Tart swerved to miss the bike but plowed into Stacy, hidden by a thick fog and his black attire.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two other passengers in Tart’s vehicle, Carland Baker, 68, of Long Beach, Miss., and Joe White, 56, of Miami, were not injured in the crash. All were wearing their seatbelts.
