Mandeville police arrested a 26-year-old man last Friday after he gained access into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment using an ax.

Lt. Tommy Breazeale with the Mandeville Police Department said at around 9 Friday morning, Edwin M. Bedford III, used an ax to pry open the sliding glass doors of his former residence in the Sandra Del Mar apartment complex, where he once lived with his ex-girlfriend.

Bedford then made his way to the bedroom where a 22-year-old man was sleeping. Breazeale said Bedford tapped the sleeping man on the shoulder and when he opened his eyes, Bedford decked him leaving a laceration and bruise under the victim’s eye.

Bedford then left the scene, Breazeale said.

When police arrived, they found the sliding doors wedged off the tracks and an ax on the floor of the front room.

Breazeale said Bedford and the female occupant had recently broken up, with Bedford moving out just several weeks prior.

“Apparently Bedford was angry over the breakup, and they were arguing back and forth,” Breazeale said.

Police were unable to locate Bedford until the next day when the ex-girlfriend called authorities from her job and told them Bedford had just called saying he was watching her and was going to kill her.

Police responded by checking the business around her place of work where they found him inside a local restaurant, Breazeale said.

He was arrested and charged with aggravated burglary, misdemeanor stalking, improper telephone communication and intimidating a witness.

He was transported to the parish jail.
