Umpire training begins today

Training for high school and recreational baseball/ softball umpires begins on today.

St. Tammany Knights tryouts

The St. Tammany Knights traveling baseball team are holding tryouts for the upcoming baseball season through mid-February. It is required that any person trying out will have to have a birth date no earlier than May 1, 1998. The squad will consist of youth players that are 10-under. It will travel mostly around the St. Tammany area and any local tournaments within reasonable distance. If you and your child are interested in playing with the Knights contact one of the coaches to set up a tryout. Mandeville Soccer Club holding referee courses

The Mandeville Soccer Club will host two levels of referee courses on Jan. 18 and Jan. 25. The Jan. 18 course is for beginners, who are least 12-years old. It takes place noon-8 p.m. at the Castine Center in Pelican Park. The Jan. 25 clinic is a bridge course and will be held from noon-8 p.m. at the MSC office. Tri-Parish officials’ clinic

The Tri-Parish Officials Association is currently holding their annual clinics for recreational and prep basketball. No experience is required, but experienced officials are welcome. St. Paul’s Ozone Spring Run

St. Paul’s class of 2009 and the Alumni Association are sponsoring the upcoming Ozone Spring Run scheduled for March 14. The 15th Street Flyers, headed by Diane and Bud Weiss, are coordinating the event. It’s the first year the Alumni Association is partnering with the senior class to sponsor the event and it will become an annual partnership with proceeds going to the senior class project and the capital campaign. The event features a two-mile fun run and a 10K run, which is a Crescent City Classic Qualifier. Each pre-registered runner receives a long sleeve T-shirt. Pre-registration is ongoing through March 7. Awards will be presented. Post race food and refreshments will be served with a live band performing. Runners can participate in a health screening. USTA Leagues Forming

United Tennis Association Flex Leagues are now forming. This is a new format that does not require you to join a team, which is ideal for players with busy schedules. Participants may register for singles and/or doubles and play according to their NTRP ratings. You can self-rate if you do not have a rating. All contests must be completed within a specified time period, which is normally about 10 weeks. The registration fee is $25 if you are already a USTA member or $35 if you are not. Pelican Park registration

Pelican Park is holding signups for boys’ basketball, girls’ volleyball and a volleyball clinic through Jan. 20. Basketball is for ages, 13-17 with birth dates as of Aug. 31, 2008. There will be a 10-game season followed by a single elimination tournament.

Girls’ volleyball is for those 9-17 with the age being as of Oct. 1, 2008. The season is 10 games with a season ending single elimination tournament. New players can register in the Castine Center office Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. through 5 p.m. Returning players can sign up at www.pelicanpark.com.

The volleyball clinic is open to 8-year olds. It will be a 5-week session held on Saturday mornings. For more information, call 626-7997.

Lacombe basketball sign ups

Lacombe recreation is accepting applications for boys and girls’ basketball until Feb. 6 for $50. The boys’ ages are 11-18, while the girls are 11-15 and the season begins in mid-February. Sign up at the Recreation Office located at 61096 South St. Mary Street in Lacombe from Monday through Friday 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. For more information, call 882-7782.

Pelican Running Club meets on Saturdays

The Pelican Running Club is a Pelican Athletic Club community program and is in its third marathon-training season. The group meets at the Mandeville Trailhead on Saturday mornings at 7 o’clock for a training run along the Tammany Trace. The suggested training schedules (available online at mardigrasmarathon.com) are designed for individuals training to complete their first marathon or half-marathon event. The group is very participatory in nature and we’ve had great fun the past two years preparing for the New Orleans Mardi Gras Marathon events. Northshore Tennis Association offers youth program

The Northshore Tennis Association has an ongoing Junior and Mr. Pee Wee development tennis program for boys and girls ages 4-18. It starts with private or semi-private sessions to familiarize youngsters with tennis terms, stroke production and procedures. The year-round programs are held at the Kehoe-France Northshore School and public courts in Covington and Mandeville. Competitions are held for boys and girls 10 and under that have not been ranked on a state level and are new to tournament competition. Yearly registration is $25 and $5 and an unopened can of tennis balls is required per tournament or $8 total per tournament.
