CHS runs past Ponchatoula

Covington’s Fighting Lions downed the Ponchatoula Green Wave 92-70 Friday with Jordan Bedford leading the way with 24 points in district action at CHS.

The Lions placed four players in double figures with Joel Bailey 19 and the Bickham brothers, Jarius and Phillip with 12 points each. Darren Lee added nine points, Terrance Singleton had eight and Tank Mizell finished with five in the Lions’ balanced attack.

CHS (15-6) moved to 2-0 in district, while PHS (8-9) slipped to 0-2.

St. Paul’s defeats Hammond

St. Paul’s Wolves eased by the Hammond Tornadoes 56-41 in district play Friday night in Hammond. SPS (12-10) evened its district record at 1-1, heading into yesterday’s game with Slidell.

SPS’ Josh White led all scorers with 29 points netting 10 points in the first half and 19 in the second. White connected on 7-of-14 three-point attempts. He also contributed six rebounds.

Derek Arnold was a big factor for the Wolves scoring six points with 10 rebounds and four assists. Morgan Wells finished with six points, four boards and four assists to help spark the Wolves. SPS connected on 15-of-16 free throws in the game, including sinking 11-of-12 in the fourth quarter.

St. Paul’s coach Mike Toups said White turned in an outstanding shooting performance with his teammates finding him for good open looks at the basket.

“Hammond is a tough place to play. It was an encouraging victory and it was very important to us early in the district race,” Toups said.

St. Paul’s held a 24-19 halftime lead. The Wolves scored 31 points in the second half, holding the Tornadoes to 22 points. St. Paul’s used inside hustle out rebounding Hammond 24-17. Toups said his club did a good job of boxing out.

Slidell knocks off Mandeville

Slidell’s Tevin Parker scored 21 points in a 67-50 victory over the Mandeville Skippers in a district game held Tuesday at MHS. Slidell (10-9) was 1-1 heading into yesterday’s game. The Skippers (16-7), whose 10-game winning streak came to an end, were also 1-1 going into yesterday.

D.J. Dauphin registered 18 points for Slidell, while Cranston Smith finished with 10 and Joseph Gayles posted seven.

Mandeville’s Jordane Ganapamo led the Skippers with 18 points, followed by Brandon Weeden with nine and Blake Kelley, seven.

Fontainebleau tops Northshore

Fontainebleau’s Bulldogs trailed, 16-4, after the first quarter, but came back to knock off the Northshore Panthers, 51-47, in a district game held Friday at NHS despite a double-double by Michael Lewis, who had 14 points and 14 rebounds. Fontainebleau (8-8) was 1-1 in district play at Tuesday’s press time, while Northshore (2-14) was also 1-1.

Quin Cooper led the Bulldogs with 19 points, while Taylor Hanby scored 12 and Jason Green posted 11.

Chris Ruiz tallied 11 points and Nick Prange posted nine.

Fontainebleau made 20-of-26 free throws, including 10-for-12 in the fourth quarter. Northshore hit 8-of-12 from the line.

First Baptist edges Ecole

First Baptist Christian School’s Caleb Earhart scored a game-high 18 points in a 44-42 victory over Ecole Classique in a home game held Friday night.

Johnathan Fredericks and Anthony Benasco each finished with eight points, while Garrett Hollingsworth posted six.
