As the weather dips well below freezing, residents and city workers alike prepared for a hard freeze, protecting pipes, plants and people.

While some of the older established buildings in the city are already prepared, Carl Rebouche, Director of Public Works for the city of Covington, spent yesterday wrapping pipes, checking heating systems and generally preparing city buildings for the cold weather.

“We fortified the pool by turning on the pumps,” Rebouche said. In addition, heaters were turned on at the water wellheads. Water was shut off completely at the new recreation complex and pipes were wrapped at the new trailhead.

The Covington police Department and City Hall were also checked for freeze preparations, he said.

The department personnel also checked pipes at the city parks including Hubie Gallagher Park, Rev. Peter Atkins Park, First Street Park and other playground areas.

In the event of ice on bridges and overpasses, Rebouche said the Department of Transportation and Development would spread sand like they did for the unexpected snowstorm in December.

Residents are also reminded to check on elderly neighbors and relatives, said Mayor’s Assistant Catherine Cooper.
