A three-alarm fire took the roof off a 1,600-square-foot home near Slidell Saturday evening.

It started about 8:30 p.m. at 60399 Dixie Ranch Road, just west of Northshore Square Mall. Members of St. Tammany Fire District 1 arrived to find flames shooting through the roof of the home and feared a collapse was imminent.

The owners of the home were out of town at the time, and it appears a neighbor called in the blaze. Chief Neil Ricca said there were no injuries, but there was substantial water damage.

It took 18 firefighters about 45 minutes to contain the fire, which is believed to have started in the attic. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but foul play is not suspected.
