Two cars collided at the top of the Robert Boulevard overpass in Slidell Tuesday afternoon, forcing one car to drive into a fence in John Slidell Park, and injuring both drivers.

According to Slidell police spokesman Capt. Kevin Foltz, Florence Aronson, 86, of Slidell was driving her 2000 Toyota Camry north on the overpass, and for an unknown reason, swerved into the other lane, hitting a 2009 Honda CRV driven by Evelyn Rancatore, 52, of Pearl River.

Foltz said the impact spun Aronson’s car around and she came back down the overpass, drove off the road and ended up hitting a fence in John Slidell Park.

Both women were injured and taken to Northshore Regional Medical Center. Foltz did not know the extent of Aranson’s injuries, but said Rancatore suffered minor injuries.

“She was more scared than anything,” Foltz said.

He said, Rancatore was on her way to her job as a school bus driver when the accident occurred.

Foltz said police do not know why Aranson swerved into the opposite lane, but said alcohol or drugs were not a factor.

“We are working on the assumption that she suffered a medical condition,” Foltz said.

He said that Aronson was not cited for the accident.

" Precisely the example of why parents should NEVER let their children slide down the hill at John Slidell Park by that overpass. It's the most unsafe place imaginable they can permit that. "
