Orange.

Orange is the color of oranges, tomatoes, carrots — and hunger.

Paula Souhlas, head of Plant a Row for the Hungry, said the group is encouraging everyone to plant a row of vegetables and donate the harvest from that row to feeding the hungry.

The group was at the Covington Farmer’s Market recently promoting the idea and distributing seeds for planting. Souhlas also said there are plans to plant a community garden on 25th Street in Covington, although a timeline has not yet been established.

A box garden was on display next to the Covington Police Station with examples of vegetables from banana peppers to cucumbers and radishes.

In addition to distributing seed packets, the group was also dispensing information about how and where to plant, what kind of care is needed and an explanation of everything from how to fix the garden to planting tips.

The group at the tent on Saturday consisted of Paula Souhlas, Virginia Bessent, Nancy Tigert and Sandra Petersen. Souhlas said the group will offer a friendly competition to see how much is raised. The local goal for the project is 1,500 pounds of food.

Herbs, fruits and vegetables are all welcome to add variety and spice to meals. Souhlas suggests planting the following vegetables: beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, cucumbers, eggplant, garlic, green beans, onions, peas, potatoes, zucchini, sweet peppers, tomatoes and summer or winter squash.

A row, or even an extra plant of any vegetable is welcome. For more information, call Souhlas at 705-5179 or Bessent at 892-3654.
