Join with the Friends of the Park in Abita Springs on Sunday from 1-4 p.m. to celebrate Earth Day. The newly renovated park will be the setting for fun, music, food and activities for the whole family.

Sheri Campbell, mayor pro tem of Abita Springs, said educational activities include “green booths” of vendors specializing in such ecologically friendly building materials as solar panels, insulation, plants, herbs and vegetables. Other booths include the League of Women Voters, Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation, Sierra Club and the Nature Conservatory.

The Friends of the Park will also have a booth with membership information and LSU season football tickets will be raffled.

The birdhouse painting station is also located there. Proceeds of the raffle will go toward handicapped access and more landscaping for the park, said Campbell.

As part of the green theme, CLECO, donor of the trees for the park, will be giving trees away at no cost. Free trees will include bald cypress, river birch, shumard oak, nutall oak, willow oak and green ash.

Master Gardeners will be on held to help with planting efforts, including a wildflower seed demo plot and planter boxes and window boxes with perennials and herbs to be placed around the park and trailhead.

There will be music sponsored by the New Orleans Jazz And Heritage Festival including The Grocery Clerks, Three Sisters from Alabama, and Alynda Lee & the Leisure Kings.

Sponsors of the event include CLECO, Abita Springs Opry and Abita Brewery. Some vendor booths are still available for a $10 fee.
