Commuters using the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway will get a smoother ride on the toll plaza in Mandeville.

General manager Robert Lambert said that increased usage of the Causeway by 18-wheelers since Hurricane Katrina caused portions of the roadway to shift. To alleviate this problem, the Causeway Commission awarded a $190,000 contract to 3C’s of Robert to replace 16 panels of concrete at the second lane of the toll plaza. Each panel is about 20 feet in length.

The original budget for the project was $235,000, meaning the bid came in at about $45,000 under budget.

The company has done previous work for the Commission.

Work will begin in about a month and no interruption of commuter traffic is expected.

Work will be done in off-times, beginning on Thursday nights and ending on Monday mornings at 4 a.m. until the work is completed.

Although the estimated timetable is for 90 days, Lambert said the work should be completed in a shorter period of time. “No work will be done during peak times,” he said. “We are very sensitive to the traffic needs of commuters,” he said.

During the weekend work sessions, only the second lane will be closed to traffic and motorists should not experience an interference with traffic.
