The public is invited to celebrate the 25 years of community service of the Rev. Alfred N. Young Jr. to raise funds for Upward Community Services’ annual summer camp for young people ages 4-14.
The event will be held at 6:30 p.m. tonight in the sanctuary of Faith Bible Church located at 1148 N. Columbia St. in Covington.

During the camp hours of 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, the campers engage in all sort of summer recreational and intellectual activities all designed to build strong bodies and stimulate inquiring minds. In addition, campers enjoy two nutritious meals each day which some of the disadvantaged young campers may not get at home. In addition, summer jobs are provided for high school teenagers who are hired and trained as camp counselors.
Tickets for the event are $50 per person and corporate sponsorships are available. Included are dinner and entertainment. Tickets may be purchased at the Upward Administration Building across Columbia Street from the church. For more information or ticket reservations, call 893-1696.
Church fundraiser planned
Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church is sponsoring a citywide fundraiser May 8-9 to rebuild the church destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Members will be selling tickets for chicken and fish plates. A free Gospel extravaganza, with dozens of artists, will be held from noon to 6 p.m. May 9 at 2445 Fourth St., Slidell.
St. Luke to hold Women’s Day
St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church, located at 910 Cross Gates Blvd., Slidell, will host a Women’s Day of Renewal from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 9. The day includes inspirational talks, a Scriptural meditation led by the Rev. Mark Lomax and music by local Catholic singer/songwriter Lorraine Hess (www.lorrainehess.com).

NOVA to present concert
The New Orleans Vocale Arts Chorale will present “Music: Sacred Spirtual, Universal” concert at 8 p.m. May 15 at Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Mandeville.
The one-hour program includes the “Hymm to St. Cecilia” by Benjamin Britten, Marian anthems by Brahams, Poulenc and Rachmaninoff and spirituals arranged by Moses Hogan. The concert is under the direction of NOVA’s artistic director Albert LeDoux.
There is no admission charge, but a free-will offering will be received. The church is located at 1501 W. Causeway Approach, Mandeville.

Book group to meet
North Shore Unitarian Universalists’ book study group will meet at 6:30 p.m. May 17 at the sanctuary to discuss “Dr. Mary’s Monkey” by Edward T. Haslam. The book links the unsolved murder of a doctor, a secret laboratory in New Orleans and cancer-causing monkey viruses to Lee Harvey Oswald, the JFK assassination and emerging global epidemics. Bible School planned
Children in kindergarten through sixth-grade are invited to attend the Thompson Road Baptist Church Vacation Bible School from 6-8 p.m. June 7-12. This year’s theme is “Boomerang Express.” A block party is planned at 6 p.m. June with a rock-climbing wall and inflatables for the children, along with a barbecue.

NSUU opening Fair Trade Store
The North Shore Unitarian Universalist Religious Education Department has opened a Fair Trade Store, which sells organic products such as coffee (decaf, Colombian, organic blend and French vanilla), hot chocolate, chocolate bars, tea (rooibos, green and breakfast), dried cranberries, pecans and travel mugs. These items will be for sale every Sunday morning both before and after the Worship service at 11 a.m. The proceeds from these sales will go to meet the needs of the religious education department of the church.
