Friends of Library luncheon set

The Friends of the Library of West St. Tammany will host its annual Spring Luncheon with guest speaker Sam Hyde Friday at Franco’s.

Hyde will be speaking on the history of west St. Tammany and the Florida parishes. He is an associate professor of history at Southeastern Louisiana University.

SMH Rooftop Rendezvous set

Slidell Memorial Hospital Foundation and St. Tammany Homestead will host Rooftop Rendezvous 2009 Saturday from 8-11 p.m. on the rooftop of the SMH parking garage.

The party under the stars will feature the music of Fredy Omar con su Banda and performances by Miceala Y Fiesta Flamenca and Latin Soul Productions. Professional dancers will also be available to give salsa lessons on-site.

Tables are $1,200 for eight and individual tickets are $100. Funds raised will be used for SMH projects and programs that fall outside the normal budget, including education and outreach programs and equipment. Reservations can be made by calling 649-8820.

Pearl’s Garden dedication set

Keep Slidell Beautiful and the Slidell Beautification Committee will formally dedicate Pearl’s Garden, in memory of late Slidell City Councilwoman Pearl Williams, at 8 a.m. May 21 at John Slidell Park.

Williams was known for her tireless dedication to beautifying the city, as well as numerous other causes. A number of businesses and private individuals contributed to the garden by donating materials and services as well as financial support. For more information call 646-4307.

Vessel safety checks set

Safe boating means having the required Safety equipment abroad your vessel. Lake Pontchartrain Sail and Power Squadron will be offering Vessel Safety Checks from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday May 16 at Marina del Ray boat Launch to make sure your boat meets U.S. Coast Guard and the State of Louisiana requirements. This is in conjunction with Safe Boating Week May 16-22. If you have a larger vessel or can’t make it on May 16, a certified vessel safety check persons can meet you at your boat at a mutually convenient time.

Lacoste reunion planned

There will be a Lacoste Elementary School, formerly of St. Bernard Parish) reunion for all former students, parents, faculty, staff and friends Sunday at Fontainebleau State Park. Registration will be at 10 a.m. in the picnic pavilion. Bring your own food, drinks, lawn chairs, and any Lacoste memorabilia that you wish to share. Wear a nametag that includes your maiden name as well as the years you were affiliated with Lacoste.

The park charges $1 per person admission fee per person. There will be a donation jar at the registration table to cover the cost of the pavilion rental and promotional expenses. Regina Coeli annual meeting in Robert

The Regina Coeli Child Development Center in Robert will host its annual General Membership Meeting May 20 at 6 p.m.

A new board of directors will be elected for the 2009-2010 year, and the meeting is open to the public.

RCCDC operates Head Start, Early Head Start and Migrant Head Start programs for children and families in Covington, Lacombe, Pearl River, and a number of communities around the region. The campus is located at 22476 U.S. Highway 190 in Robert. For more information call 318-8800.

Cooking classes set at library

The St. Tammany Parish Library will hold The Covington Cookbook Club. Jan Butler, St. Tammany Parish Library Director, will prepare recipes from the Library’s vast cookbook collection. All presentations will be held on Wednesdays from 6:45-8p.m. at the Covington branch library. Program attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite cookbooks for show-and-tell.

The Cookbook Club will meet:

May 20 – “Healthy Eating in Tough Times: Recipes, Circulars & Coupons;”

June 24 – It’s Too Hot to Cook and I’m Tired of Tossed Salads!”

STPH to hold ethics lecture

St. Tammany Parish Hospital will host ethics lectures about End of Life Care, Conscience & Commitment, presented by Dr. Diann Uustal, May 21 in the Mandeville/Covington Room at STPH, 1202 South Tyler St. in Covington.

The lectures will be presented from 8-11:30 a.m. and repeated from 1-4:30 p.m.?

The lecture will provide 3.5 contact hours approved for nurses, social workers, physical therapists, radiologic technologists, respiratory therapists, speech pathologists and occupational therapists.

The cost for non-employees of STPH will be $30. Call the STPH Education Department at 898-4083 to register or for more information. Registration begins 30 minutes before the presentation begins. Light refreshments will be served.

Car giveaway set by non-profit

Don’t Give Up – Non-profit Gospel Organizaton is sponsoring the 2009 Mazda 6 Giveaway. Every $5 donation is a chance to win and there is no purchase limit. The drawing will be held at 7 p.m. May 22, at the Lee Williams and the Spiritual QC’s concert at the Greater Refuse Temple Ministries, 105 N.W. Central Ave. in Amite. Library to host Northshore memoirs

The St. Tammany Parish Library will host a presentation, “What the Storm Brought Home: 1940's Northshore Memories” with Jere Pfister of Houston at the Slidell branch library.

The presentation will take place at from 6-7:45 May 22. Light refreshments will be available for the attendees.

Boating safety class upcoming

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Division 081-04-08 in Slidell will be offering a one-day boating safety seminar from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 23. The About Boating Safety course will cover choosing the right vessel, trailering, navigation rules, boat and PWC handling, legal requirements, boating emergencies, enjoying water sports, lines (ropes) and tying types of knots. Passing the course will qualify participants for boat insurance discounts with many cooperating insurance providers. Contact your insurance agent for what discounts they offer.

The course will be held at First United Methodist Church meeting room, 433 Erlanger St., Slidell. The deadline to register for the class is May 22. The cost is $25, which includes the ABS textbook and final examination. Participants can also register and pick up textbooks at Gus’ Tackle and Nets, 726 Old Spanish Trail, Slidell.

Japanese dance lessons offered

The Slidell branch of the St. Tammany Parish Library will offer a Japanese folk dancing lesson. Sugai Barker, recently recognized for her skill by the Japanese Consulate in New Orleans, will teach the classes.

The lessons will be given from 3:15-4:30 p.m. May 23.

Memorial Day event upcoming

Lacombe’s Davis/Moran Veterans of Foreign Wars Post will host a Memorial Day ceremony on May 30, the traditional Memorial Day, at 6 p.m. at the Bayou Lacombe Boat Ramp, Main Street and Bayou Lacombe, off Louisiana Highway 434, South Lake Road.

Following the ceremony, the post will give certificates of appreciation to a St. Tammany Sheriff’s Office deputy and a Lacombe firefighter. The post Ladies Auxiliary will honor a Lacombe Outstanding Citizen.

Basket-weaving at state park

A basket-weaving workshop will be held at the Otis House Museum in Fairview-Riverside State Park covering the history and techniques of one of the oldest crafts. The workshop will be held at 9 a.m. May 30 and last for about 2-3 hours. All supplies are included.

The program is free with park admission of $1 per person. Seniors 62 and over and children under 3 are admitted free of charge. Fairview-Riverside State Park is located one mile east of Madisonville on Louisiana Highway 22. To pre-register, call 792-4652.

Italian language classes planned

The Covington branch library will present Italian Language Instruction with Paul Cimino.

Six Italian language classes will be held from 6:30-7:45 p.m. on consecutive Thursdays June 4 through July 9.

The instructor, Mr. Paul Cimino, was born in Cefalu, Italy on the island of Sicily. He is the son of chefs and has taught Italian cooking, culture and history at U.N.O., Delgado and other locales.

Boating safety course offered

The Lake Pontchartrain Sail and Power Squadron will present America’s Boating Course on Saturday June 6 at the Maritime Museum, at 133 Mabel Drive, in Madisonville from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The course material will include Intro to Boating, Federal and State boating laws, Personal Safety Equipment, Navigation, Personal Water Craft and much more. Jamaica Me Crazy fundraiser set

The American Cancer Society will host Jamaica Me Crazy fundraiser, 7 p.m. to midnight on Aug. 8 at the Greater Covington Center Bogue Falaya Hall, 317 N. Jefferson. The adult party will feature music by Four Unplugged, food from local restaurants, cash bar and live and silent auctions.

Tickets can be purchased after June 1 at First Castle Credit Union on Louisiana Highway 21 or at www.jamaicamecrazysttammany.org.

Free car seat safety checks

The Louisiana Office of Public Health Child Safety Coordinator will be on hand to offer free car seat safety checks at Slidell Memorial Hospital Parenting Center each Tuesday.

An appointment is required. The Parenting Center is located at 501 Robert Blvd., at the rear of the Wellness Pavilion. To schedule, call 871-1300.

Volunteers needed for horse therapy

Volunteers are urgently needed to assist with the therapeutic riding classes Tuesdays through Saturdays for children and adults with disabilities. Volunteers, ages 13 and older, either to lead the horses or walk beside the riders while providing emotional and physical support. Experience with horses is not necessary. Training is provided twice each month, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Call 796-3677 or e-mail ntherapy@bellsouth.net.
