Military Road Alliance to host hurricane preparedness meeting With hurricane season set to begin June 1, the threat of hurricanes will be the topic of the upcoming public meeting of the Military Road Alliance scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. M.R.A. monthly meetings are held in the dining room of Live Oak Village Assisted Living Center, 2200 E. Gause Blvd. and are open to the public. Dave Doherty, current M.R.A. president, announced that J. Ernest “Sunny” Breeding, Ph.D., will be the guest speaker on “How to Determine the Threat Level of a Hurricane and What to Expect.” Breeding, recently a research physicist with the Naval Research Laboratory at Stennis Space Center in Mississippi, will illustrate the discussion with technical photos of Hurricane Ike. Breeding, who has a Ph.D. in Geophysics from Columbia University in New York, has held faculty positions with Florida State University, Tallahassee and Florida Institute of Technology, Melbourne, Fla. “I’ve spent most of my professional life researching, publishing or teaching about ocean waves generated by storms like hurricanes,” Breeding says. “For the M.R.A., I’ll describe how I follow the day-to-day changes in a hurricane, using sources on the Internet. With this information, I can determine the threat level of a hurricane, and what to expect once the storm gets into coastal waters and moves onshore,” Breeding said. Residents are encouraged to access information about this Military Road Alliance meeting and other M.R.A. activities through its Web site at: www.militaryroadalliance.org. Local residents and homeowner associations interested in keeping up on community activities and information, or interested in becoming a member of the M.R.A, should contact current president Dave Doherty, 646-1851, or e-mail him at davbarb@bellsouth.net. |
