A St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Deputy responding to a call in Lacombe Thursday found himself being transported to the hospital after his patrol car was involved in a collision.

According to Sgt. James O’Quinn of the Louisiana State Police, Troop L it happened around 6:15 p.m. when Deputy Ryan Knopp was heading westbound on U.S. Highway 190. He was turning onto Tranquility Road when a 2000 Jeep, headed eastbound, smashed into the patrol car on the passenger side.

The Jeep reportedly flipped over after it hit the deputy’s vehicle. Knopp sustained moderate injuries, while the other driver’s injuries were reported as minor.

Both were transported by Acadian Ambulance to Louisiana Medical Center and Heart Hospital.

A passing motorist, who asked to remain anonymous, had just picked up her child from her mother’s home and was driving by when the accident occurred.

“I saw the cop go by, and I just happened to look up in my rearview mirror,” she said. “That’s when I saw the Jeep flip over.”

The woman said dozens of police officers were on the scene in a matter of minutes.

“They walked the deputy over to side of road,” she said. “It looked like he was in some real pain.”

George Bonnett, spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office, said Knopp received some stitches to his head and could possibly return to work sometime next week. The accident remains under investigation.

" Hate to say it, and I do respect the Parish, but of the 38 years I have lived here in Covington, I have seen too many deputies take lots of things for granted as far as the driving goes! "
