aBruce Bundy of Mandeville High School and Dr. Timothy Schneider of Fontainebleau Junior High School were each named finalists for the Principal of the Year competition for the state of Louisiana.

They were each selected by the region as representatives for the high school level and middle school levels, respectively. They will be honored at the Cecil J. Picard Educator Excellence Symposium and Celebration in July at which time the Principal of the Year will be announced for each level.

State Superintendent of Schools Paul Pastorek said, “Extraordinary school leadership is crucial to raising student achievement...In their roles as leaders of their school communities, these individuals shoulder an enormous responsibility, yet they have all risen to the challenge. We are looking forward to expressing our gratitude to them for their service.”

Nominees for Principal of the Year start at the local school system and progress through the regional selection process. The regional finalists are then interviewed by a state selection committee.

Criteria include leadership skills and commitment to academic excellence; community leadership; respect of students, parents and colleagues; affiliations with educational organizations and demonstration of a superior ability to provide instructional leadership to teachers and students of all backgrounds and abilities.

Last year, St. Tammany Parish had the state Teacher of the Year, Deborah Tonguis and Superintendent of the Year, Gayle Sloan.

Tonguis teaches at Mandeville High School, lead by principal Bundy. She teaches world geography and psychology at the school.
