The New Orleans Saints and United Way for the Greater New Orleans area are holding the Sixth annual Community Patrol Summer Camps at the Saints’ Practice Facility on Airline Drive in Metairie. Five separate two-day camps are scheduled with youngsters ranging in age from 9-13. Approximately 60 youngsters from the Boys and Girls Club of Covington participated in the program June 30 and July 1 being instructed by various Saints players.
The camp’s goal is to teach skills that will improve the behavior and attitudes of the participants in preparation for the new school year through football. The Saints and United Way have teamed up once again to present the 2009 summer camp program for local area youngsters. The coaching staff teaches each participant various football skills. During the rotations, campers also have the chance to learn “life skills” through lessons taught by representatives of the Children’s Bureau. The camps focus on conflict resolution, adaptation and coping skills, and crisis management. The two-day camps are conducted free of charge through the United Way and Saints partnership.
Jason Trosclair, the club’s director of youth programs, said the Saints are pleased to continue their on-going support.
“Commitment to our local youth has always been one of the passions of the Benson family. With the support of them, the Saints and the United Way, we were able to provide these children from the Northshore with a unique experience that combined fun and teaching them about the skills necessary to succeed on both the field and in the classroom,” Trosclair said.
