Covington Mayor Candace Watkins said calling the event an Open Mike Night allowed the city to provide services to those in attendance, including electricity and open rest rooms The April 15 Tea Party at the facility saw no electricity and locked bathrooms, which sparked debates during city council meetings about the use of the facility by the taxpayers who funded it.
“Since we don’t have a rental policy and do not rent out the Trailhead, we developed programming that will allow for use of the facility,” said Watkins Thursday night. “This is good for us. It brings people downtown. By having an open mike night, people can talk about anything,” she said. “In the future, it may not be political; it may focus on the arts or comedy or anything. Tonight’s theme happens to be political.”

Among the activities at the event, organized by political columnist and commentator Jeff Crouere, were speeches, several handouts and a secret ballot asking questions on policy and current issues.
The ballot will be tabulated this week and the results shared with elected officials. Questions included “Do you believe that the government should control or nationalize the healthcare industry?” and “Do you believe that the federal government should bailout private industries such as GM, Chrysler, banks and insurance companies?”
Speakers at the event included Tom Kowitz, Maura Donahue and U. S. Marine Corps veteran Matthew Cole.
Cole, an active member of Support Our Troops, suffered a spinal cord injury while serving his second tour of duty in Iraq. Confined to a wheelchair, he received a standing ovation after his patriotic speech calling for more people to remember the Pledge of Allegiance and fly the flag.
Recounting experiences in Iraq and how much was done to liberate the people there, Cole said he was “eager to see the news reports on how well and honorably we liberated the Iraqi people. But all I saw were reports on escalating violence and Americans killed in action.”
Cole said that he was honored to serve and although he nearly died and sustained “life altering injuries,” he said he has no regrets. “My condition is a small price to pay for freedom.”
Flag-waving and cheers met his speech as attendees gave him a standing ovation.

Teresa, they don't care that George W. Bush doubled the debt- he shares their "values" (getting rich friends richer?) and now theres a black guy with a funny name to pin all their ire on. "

The way to end racism is for each of us personally to stand up and say we find racism unacceptable. Not to provide political cover for racism by makign excuses for racist behavior or pretending that it's the fault of anyone but the racist.
I feel sorry for the kids growing up today who think that "conservativism" is all about whining about being a victim. "

That calling an 11 year old child "a typical street [prostitute]" and "ghetto trash" because she happens to be black--as strong supporters of the Teabagging movement just did--isn't "keeping racism alive"....but criticizing those remarks is?
Does anyone but R. Side really believe that it's the fault of non-racists that teabaggers say these kinds of things about black children? "

I see you've progressed to actively lying about me. Why am I not surprised?
Lies and demonization are conservative's stock and trade.
I have NEVER said that "all differences are about racism." I have pointed out that I MYSELF have some differences with President Obama.
But SOME differences of opinion ARE about racism. Including the opinion that deficits "don't matter" if there's a white president and are grounds for succession if there's a black president.
But keep lying about me. It's all you've got. You know your position won't stand honest scrutiny. "

If President Obama were a woman, Teresa would be saying the Tea Party was sexist because they did not agree with the president because of her sex.
I am now in agreement with Teresa and Evan, color, race, sex, and age are the key indicators of someones motives, intellect, and beliefs. I think I might move to Mexico, Cuba, N Korea or Russia.
Thanks to all for enlightening me. "

"Conservatives" weren't even able to take care of their own basic needs like bladder and bowel care without the government stepping in to make the decisions and provide the funding and resources.
How sad is that? "

Republicans are going to continue to play second fiddle if they keep electing these far right reactionary types. Whats wrong with Charlie Crist? I might have voted for him in '08, but instead the GOP has to nominate the same old socially conservative economically dimwitted tool. Theres a reason economists don't trust conservatives with the economy- they can't manage it. "

Besides a clueless hypocrite I mean.
And still not ONE of you can address how the right's opinions magically changed about tax cuts and deficit spending when the skin color of the president changed.
Or why "anti-tax" protesters are protesting tax CUTS.
But I can see why you all would rather do your Ann Coulter routine and insult the liberals rather than examine your own positions or--heaven forbid--discuss the ISSUES. "

I guess government spending is ok when you're the one who benefits.
If they were really sincere in their positions, they would have used private enterprise, by renting a hall, land, or other venue, instead of holding their hands out to the taxpayers to fund the event. "

I'm very curious to know why this question was included. There are NO plans for the government to "control or nationalize" the healthcare industry.
Health care reform, such as a public option for uninsured people to be able to choose, is another issue entirely.
Could it be that our "patriotic" teabaggers were trying to deceive the low information voter? "
teresa wrote on Jul 7, 2009 7:35 PM:
(In another thread, we already debunked the notion that they were protesting deficit spending; these same folks CHEERED it under the Bushes and Reagan).
I think we all know the answer to that question. It's as plain as the nose on your race...er face. "
